Harvey Barnes joins Newcastle from Leicester in £39m deal

Newcastle have signed Harvey Barnes from Leicester City in a deal believed to be around £39 million.

The 25-year-old winger is Newcastle’s second big signing of the summer, following the acquisition of Sandro Tonali from AC Milan earlier this month.

He joins Newcastle as a replacement for Allan Sanit-Maximin, who is set for a £40m move to Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.

“I’m delighted,” Barnes told the club after sealing his move to St. James’ Park.

“It’s an amazing club, and for me, it’s a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that’s doing exciting things, so I’m absolutely buzzing to be here.

“I think it’s an attacker’s dream to come into a team like this; it’s high-paced, it’s physically demanding, but you can see the rewards of that with the chances and the goals scored, so I think I’ll certainly suit the style.”

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe added: “Harvey is an exciting talent who I have admired for a long time, so I’m delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United.

“He is strong, quick and very good technically, and he showed last season in particular that he has an eye for goal from wide positions.

“He will add a different element to our play, and we look forward to working with him as we prepare for the season ahead.”

Barnes made 187 appearances for Leicester and won the FA Cup after coming through the club’s academy. The 25-year-old scored 13 goals for the Foxes last season–a career-best–despite Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League.

Official: James Maddison joins Tottenham on a five-year deal

Tottenham have completed the signing of James Maddison from Leicester City in a reported £40million deal.

The England international is Tottenham’s second new addition this summer after the club signed Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on a five-year deal earlier this week.

Maddison has agreed on a deal that will run until 2028, with Spurs expected to pay close to £45m total in the deal.

The 26-year-old began his career with Coventry City, progressing through the youth ranks to make his professional debut in August 2014. He then joined Championship side Norwich City in January 2016 but remained at Coventry for one season. He made 42 appearances in total for his home town club, scoring five goals.

He enjoyed success in Norwich City, finishing his first full campaign as the club’s top scorer with 15 goals and claiming City’s Player of the Season award, among other personal prizes.

He earned a £20m switch to Leicester the following season and had been a key Foxes player throughout his time at the club. The England international reached double figures in front of goal in the Premier League in both 2021/22 and 2022/23 and has played Europa League and Europa Conference League football.

Arsenal ‘OPEN talks with Leicester to sign defender Timothy Castagne

Arsenal have reportedly begun talks with Leicester City to sign defender Timothy Castagne.

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri via Sportsmail, the Gunners will target the Belgian if they miss out on first-choice target Ivan Fresneda, who Borussia Dortmund also wants.

Mikel Arteta’s side are looking for an extra right-back and have identified the Real Valladolid defender as top of the list. But Borussia Dortmund’s interest in his services has pushed them towards signing Castagne, who could also come cheaper.

Leicester City want to sell some of their players following their relegation from the top flight, and Castagne could be amongst the players to leave the King Power Stadium this window.

The Foxes value at about £ 24 million and will be willing to let him leave if Arsenal meets their valuation.

Castagne made 37 league appearances for Leicester this season. The 27-year-old has played 112 times for the club since joining Atalanta in 2020.

The Belgian is capped over 30 times for his country and can also play left-back if required, making him a valuable asset for any club that will sign him.

Arsenal appears well-stocked in that area of the pitch, with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu fighting for the right-back berth.

Tottenham open talks Newcastle target James Maddison

Tottenham have reportedly opened talks with Leicester City over the signing of star midfielder James Maddison as they look to beat Newcastle to his signature.

According to reports by 90min, Spurs want to move quickly to beat Newcastle to the signing of the midfielder, who registered ten goals and nine assists during the 2022/23 Premier League campaign for the relegated Foxes.

The 26-year-old has been a long-term target for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side, but Spurs’ interest dates back to his days at Norwich.

According to a 90min report, new Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou has already given his approval for the pursuit of Maddison, and talks are now underway with Leicester.

But the relegated Foxes are not ready to sell cheaply as they want to get at least £55million for the two-cap England international.

Leicester knows that Madison is a highly sought player as he has also been spoken to by Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal over the last six months.

But from the latest report, Spurs are now going head-to-head with Newcastle for his signature. The Magpies are considering moves for several players at the three teams who were relegated. However, Eddie Howe’s side is reportedly reluctant to offer much more than that sum at this stage.

Meanwhile, Spurs are ready to offer the 26-year-old a salary package comparable to star striker Harry Kane. At the same time, Newcastle would make him the joint-highest earner at St. James’ Park alongside Bruno Guimaraes.

Aston Villa join the race to sign Youri Tielemans on a free transfer

Premier League side Aston Villa have joined the race to sign out-of-contract Leicester City star Youri Tielemans.

The relegated Foxes have released the 26-year-old after his contract with the club ended at the season’s end.

He joined Leicester from Monaco in 2019 but has ended his time at the King Power Stadium.

He announced his departure on Instagram, saying:

“I’m bidding farewell to this incredible club.

“I am forever grateful for your support.”

He is now set to become a free agent and has attracted interest from several top clubs in the Premier League.

Top six side Arsenal have been long-term suitors, while Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are also linked with his signature, with the Reds keen on a squad rebuild.

However, according to Sportsmail, Afton Villa have joined the race for the Belgian. However, Unai Emery wants a quick answer from the 26-year-old as he plans his summer rebuild.

Villa wants to build a squad that can compete in the Conference League and push towards the Premier League’s top four next season. They see Tielemans as an experienced head that will improve their squad.

The Belgian has a lot of Premier League experience and is famous for scoring the winning goal in Leicester’s FA Cup win over Chelsea two seasons ago.

Meanwhile, Tielemans is one of seven players released by Leicester City after they were relegated.

Turkish international Caglar Soyuncu has an agreement with Atletico Madrid, while Ghanaian international Daniel Amartey, Tete, Ayoze Perez and Nampalys Mendy have also left.

Premier League football resumes this Monday as Newcastle United welcomes Leicester City to St. James’ Park for the penultimate game of the 2022/23 season.

Both sides are desperate for three points, with Newcastle desperate to win here to seal a place in the Premier League top four, while Leicester are fighting to avoid relegation.

Eddie Howe’s side took a step closer to their aim with a very important 4-1 win over high-flying Brighton last time. That win took them to within three points of Champions League qualification, which they can achieve if they win here.

But if they lose here, they will go into the last game of the season, probably needing a win to seal a top-four finish.

Having escaped a potential banana skin against Brighton, the Magpies should be confident of winning here, especially as they have a strong home record. Howe’s side have lost just two times at home this season, winning eleven and drawing five times.

Meanwhile, Leicester City are on the brink of relegation after a 3-0 loss to Liverpool in their last outing. The Foxes are about to make a muted exit from the top flight just seven years after becoming the unlikeliest English champions of all time.

If they lose here, they will be relegated, as they sit second from the bottom, two points behind the safety line with a terrible goal difference.

The signs are ominous for them as they are winless in four (D2, L2), where they have shipped in ten goals. Dean Smith’s side are also winless in seven games away from home (D2, L5), adding extra doubt to their chances. While they have netted in their five most recent tests on hostile turf, it offers no guarantee they will score against a Newcastle side that has conceded the second-fewest goals in the league this season (32).

Fulham vs Leicester City: Preview and Expert Prediction

Leicester City will continue their fight for Premier League survival this Monday when they travel to London to face Fulham.

The Cottagers were one of the teams expected to challenge for a top-six fight towards the end of the season. However, they have endured a poor ending to the season, with seven losses recorded in their last nine league games (W2).

The most recent in that sequence was a narrow 1-0 loss to Liverpool last weekend which extended their losing streak to three games. As such, they come into this round of games sitting in tenth position, three points ahead of Chelsea.

Therefore, their league placement should still be considered a commendable achievement by Marco Silva’s men, especially as the Cottagers last three Premier League campaigns all ended in relegation.

Meanwhile, Fulham have won only one of their last five home PL matches (D1, L3), so another disappointing outing could be on the cards for the Cottagers, who will be desperate to give their fans something to cheer about.

Leicester City’s fight to avoid relegation remained on track as they held fellow strugglers Everton to a 2-2 draw in their last outing. Although Dean Smith’s side were outplayed in the game against Everton and needed the heroics of goalkeeper Daniel Iversen to snatch the result, they won’t be worried much as the result kept them above the relegation zone and extended their unbeaten run to three games (W1, D2).

They will travel to Craven Cottage, desperate to record their longest unbeaten run of the season. However, they would have to overcome the hurt of losing four of their last six matches on their travels (D2) to achieve that feat.

Meanwhile, Leicester have conceded first in all but one of their last 17 PL matches. So we expect that there will be a first-half goal in this game.

Leicester vs Everton: Preview and Expert Football Prediction

The Premier League continues this Monday with a massive relegation six-pointer between Leicester City and Everton at the King Power Stadium.

Both sides are among the bottom five teams who are separated by just six points and most-likey to get relegated at the end of the season.

However, Leicester have been progressing under Dean Smith since the Englishman replaced Brendan Rodgers. The former Aston Villa began his reign with a 3-1 loss to Manchester City but did better in the second game, as his side beat Wolves 2-1.

They followed that up with a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Leeds United last time out. The result moved the Foxes to 29 points, one above their Monday visitors Everton. So a win here will take them four points above Everton and potentially put their survival chances in their hands.

So naturally, Dean Smith would be desperate to win here and record Leicester’s second consecutive league win at home for the first time since May last year.

Meanwhile, Everton are also desperate for maximum points to end their torrid run of six games without a win (D3, L3), with a 4-1 loss to Newcastle United last Thursday night the most recent in that sequence.

That loss came at home, where raucous fans with songs and blue flares welcomed them. But that reception did not inspire them to win, so it is hard to envision them winning away from home.

And the fact that Sean Dyche’s side have not won an away game in the Premier League since October also makes it difficult to picture a win here. The Toffees have lost ten of their last 15 away games in all competitions (D4), failing to score on nine occasions.

However, they have drawn three of their last four road outings while they have also enjoyed success at this venue recently, winning each of their last two visits to the King Power Stadium. This means they could register a much-needed third successive win here for the first time in their history.

Meanwhile, Everton have failed to score in four of their last five away games played on a Monday (D1, L4). So we might witness a low-scoring game with under 2.5 goals.

Leeds United vs Leicester City: Preview and Expert Football Prediction

The Premier League resumes this week with two relegation-threatened sides, Leeds United and Leicester City, battling for three points at Elland Road this Tuesday.

Both sides are separated by one point after 32 games and are among the nine teams currently fighting for their lives in the Premier League.

Leeds United find themselves at the head of what might be a five-horse race in 16th place since the bottom five clubs are only separated by as many points.

They have not helped their course recently after their 2-1 defeat to Fulham last time out made it three defeats in a row for Javi Gracia’s side.

A return to Elland Road usually helps their course, but they’ve been bad in their recent home games, suffering heavy 5-1 and 6-1 defeats to Crystal Palace and Liverpool, respectively.

Nerves might be exacerbated when a desperate Leicester City visits them then, especially with Leeds winning only one of the last nine head-to-head meetings (D3, L5) and keeping only one clean sheet then.

Meanwhile, Leicester took a giant step towards their step to survival with a 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out.

The result ended a run of four straight losses and ten competitive games without a win for the Foxes. But the result kept them waiting for a clean sheet for another game.

Leicester are the only club in Europe’s top-five leagues without a top-flight clean sheet since the World Cup. It’s now been 17 PL matches since their last shutout.

But they would be okay with it as long as they keep getting three points, as that win against Wolves made them climb out of the bottom three into the coveted 17th place.

Securing back-to-back wins for the first time since February will therefore see them leapfrog their hosts and give them their first league double over Leeds this century after winning the reverse fixture 2-0 in October.

The Foxes have either been the hunter or the hunted on the road this season, though, as they’ve only drawn a league-low one away match.

Meanwhile, twenty of Leeds’ PL matches this season have seen both teams score a league-high. So a BTTS/GG game should be expected here.

Manchester City vs Leicester City: Preview and Expert Football Prediction

After their midweek exertions in the Champions League, Manchester City will return to Premier League action on Saturday evening as they take on relegation-threatened Leicester City at the Etihad.

The Cityzens secured a massive first-leg win in their Champions League quarter-finals tie, beating Bundesliga giants 3-0 at the Etihad on Tuesday courtesy of goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and the in-form Erling Haaland.

The win was their ninth consecutive win in all competitions and extended their unbeaten run to 13 competitive games (W11, D2). Pep Guardiola’s side scored 3+ goals in nine of those 13 games, keeping six clean sheets.

Given their streak, they remain on course for a historic treble and will come into this tie in confident mode. They currently trail league leaders Arsenal by six points with a game in hand and can be backed to win here, given their strong record against Leicester City.

Pep Guardiola’s men have triumphed in ten of the last 12 PL head-to-head (L2), while a run of ten straight wins at home also puts them as clear favourites.

Meanwhile, Leicester will be desperate to kick off their life under former Aston Villa boss Dean Smith with a win when they visit the Etihad on Saturday. The Foxes recently sacked their FA Cup-winning coach Brendan Rodgers after a terrible run of results that saw them drop to the bottom three after one point from seven games (D1, L1).

The former Aston Villa coach will be hoping to hit the ground running and will also be desperate to make good his boast that the relegation mountain is surmountable for the Foxes this season.

As expected, his side enters this clash as clear outsiders, given that they have lost four of their last eight competitive away games without reply (W2, D1, L5).

Meanwhile, Man City have picked up 28 of 30 available PL points when scoring first at home this season (W9, D1). So Smith will be hoping that they don’t score first–something that looks impossible given that Leicester have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 competitive games.

That said, we can expect a first-half goal from this tie and a game of over 2.5 goals.
