Carolina Panthers trade for top pick in 2023 NFL Draft

The Carolina Panthers could not guarantee themselves a rookie quarterback for the first round, not when picking ninth overall. That is why they do not pick ninth anymore. Carolina is close to making a bold move to trade up to the top overall pick in this year’s draft, courtesy of the deal with the Chicago Bears Friday. Multiple reports confirm that the Panthers will trade the Bears the ninth overall pick in this year’s draft, the late second-rounder bought from the San Francisco 49ers (61st overall), including next year’s first-round pick, a 2025 second-rounder, and wide receiver DJ Moore to get to the No.1 overall choice in this year’s draft. The deal becomes official at the start of the league year next Wednesday. Although this is a significant haul for Chicago, it is the cost of doing business to get a top rookie quarterback too, something that Carolina was clearly set on doing. “You go get the guy that you want, you know,” general manager Scott Fitterer said at the combine about potentially trading up for a quarterback. “If you have a conviction on a guy, you go get him. It’s pretty simple that way. If you don’t know and you’re going to give all these resources to go up and get it, you’re hurting your team in the long run. “You better be right. You better have conviction if you do move up. When you do that, you’re all in.” The move reassures the team of one of the groups of top four passers in this year’s draft – Bryce Young from Alabama, CJ Stroud from Ohio, Will Levis from Kentucky or Anthony Richardson from Florida. This was not something they could have been sure of if they remained at No.9. It also gives the Panthers certainty going into the start of free agency next week, knowing they can build a plan around a drafted rookie quarterback rather than getting a different grade from a veteran starter. They talked to Derek Carr former Raiders quarterback, but he has signed a four-year deal with the Saints. The only quarterbacks warming Carolina’s roster presently are Matt Coral and Jacob Eason. Knowing that they can now draft one, the Carolina Panthers can change their perception of free agents. Quarterbacks available next week in free agency are Jimmy Garoppolo, Sam Darnold, Jacoby Brissett, and others. Even Mbappe could not inspire them to success after snubbing a move to current Champions League holders Real Madrid last summer.  But after the game, the PSG record top-scorer revealed that he remains committed to the club’s quest for the Ligue 1 title even though he refused to state his long-term position in Paris. When asked to clarify his future beyond this season, Mbappe told reporters post-match: “No, no, I’m calm. The only thing that matters to me this season is to win Ligue 1, and then we’ll see. Connor McDavid scores career-high 124 points

Connor McDavid the Edmonton Oilers captain has scored twice to boost his NHL-leading goal to 54, setting a career-high with 124 points in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night. McDavid makes a case to win his third Hart Trophy for MVP in eight seasons, with his 12th multigoal game of the season, aiding the Oilers to secure two crucial points in a packed Western Conference race to the playoffs. “The finish was all-world,” Jay Woodcroft the Edmonton Oilers coach said about McDavid scoring the first goal on the fly by defeating Craig Anderson through the legs 3:23 into the third period, less than a minute after Buffalo tied the game at 2.  McDavid’s 124 points in 65 games are over the career best he set in 80 games last year, and the All-Star centre took his points streak to 11 games, in which he has 12 goals and 15 assists. “I saw someone that was competitive right from the puck drop,” Woodcroft said. “Connor’s at a different evolutionary stage in his game right now, and I think everyone saw that here tonight.” It is not often that a crowd from the Eastern Conference gets to watch Connor McDavid play in person and for that game, they seem to have gotten their money’s worth; although the Sabres failed to pick up two points in their fight for a wild-card berth. “Who’s more likely to make a big play than him?” Zach Hyman said. “He’s the best player in the world, and he’s pushing his own boundaries. He’s been driving the bus for a long time and continues to get better.” Derek Ryan scored too, while Stuart Skinner blocked 37 shots for Edmonton, who rose to 5-4-3 in their past 12 and came back from a 7-5 loss at Winnipeg on Saturday. Meanwhile, Jeff Skinner and Dylan Cozens scored for the Sabres and Anderson blocked 34 shots. By dropping to 6-4 in its last 10 games, the Sabres resumed its season-long struggles at Buffalo in losing five of their past seven. The Sabres have been in the middle of an NHL-worst 11-season playoff drought but stay in the mix and have games in hand on most of its competition. The day started with four points demarcating the New York Islanders who were in seventh place from the Buffalo Sabres which are in ninth place; locked in a four-way tie with 68 points. The Sabres coach Don Granato did not say if he thought McDavid to be a step ahead of everyone else in the league, out of deference to his own players. But, Granato had no other option but to sing the praises of the Oiler’s captain, who scored twice on three shots on net. “He’s got 50-plus for a reason, he doesn’t need many [shots],” Granato said. “He’s done that to lots of teams and goaltenders, and he was ready for his opportunities. That’s what makes him special.” The Edmonton Oilers (35-22-8) share a tie with Seattle for third place in the Pacific Divison.  After opening the scoring in the first period, McDavid scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period, immediately after Cozens tied the game. Warren Foegele moved up to the left wing to take the Sabres’ zone and then spun to hit McDavid in stride cutting up the middle. McDavid steered to his left to get by defender Jacob Bryson and fired a shot through Anderson’s legs. It was McDavid’s ninth game-winning goal of the season after he started the day in a four-way tie for second and one behind teammate Leon Draisaitl. Connor McDavid and the Oilers will play the NHL-best Boston Bruins next on Thursday night. Quick Recap: NHL Expert Picks; Buffalo Sabres Vs Edmonton Oilers Predictions Today

geno smith signs new contract deal

Seattle Seahawks, QB Geno Smith sign new three-year contract worth $105 million

The Seattle Seahawks have ensured that Geno Smith continues his new career narrative in Seattle in 2023 and beyond. Seattle and Smith agreed to a new three-year contract worth $15 million, according to a report on Monday from NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. This deal is coming ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for teams to use franchise tags on players and desist from protracted contract negotiation that could extend into the summer. Smith successfully completed a career turnaround, having led the Seahawks to a postseason berth in 2022 on his way to winning the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award. The ex-second-round pick by the New York Jets in 2013 spent the last seven seasons as a substitute, including the last three in Seattle shadowing Russell Wilson. Coming into 2022, Smith was expected by most people to be a stopgap, replacement-level starter for the Seahawks. Instead, Smith shined from the jump. He completed a league-high 69.8 per cent of his passes for 4,282 yards, 30 TDs, and 11 INTs on his way to a Pro Bowl bid. Smith demonstrated an ability to run the offense with aplomb and make splash plays, establishing amazing rapport with receivers DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett. All offseason, the Seahawks brass had said it wanted to retain Geno Smith, Seattle achieved that on Monday.

Ja Morant suspended from 2 games by the Memphis Grizzlies after gun video

Ja Morant the Grizzlies guard has been suspended and will miss at least two games, the Memphis Grizzlies announced on Saturday. This news came after Morant posted a video of him to Instagram Live which seemed to show him holding a gun at the nightclub.  “We are aware of a social media post involving Ja Morant and are investigating.’’ Mike Bass the NBA spokesman told Adrian Wojnarowski earlier on Saturday. This story is coming up days after Molly Hensley-Clancy of the Washington Post reported that Morant was mentioned in a police report for punching a 17-year-old repeatedly at a pickup basketball game last summer and then brandishing a gun at the teenager. TMZ Sports said the 17-year-old filed a lawsuit against Ja Morant in September.  In another case, Morant allegedly “threatened’’ a security guard at Memphis mall in an altercation which took place over the summer, although nobody was arrested.  Bob Kravitz and Sam Amick of The Athletic, report that the NBA also investigated a January situation where friends of Morant got into an argument with members of the Indiana Pacers travelling party.  The Pacer travelling group recounted that someone in a car carrying Morant and others flashed a laser on them as it drove past them outside the arena. They believed the laser was attached to a gun. The NBA said it could not prove the alleged use of a weapon to threaten the group.  Ja Morant has been one of the top young players in the league throughout his four seasons with the Grizzlies, receiving two All-Star selections, a Rookie of the Year award and last year’s Most Improved Player award. Morant is averaging 27.1 points, 8.2 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game this season, making him a shoo-in for MVP candidate for the second-best team in the Western Conference going into Saturday. The Memphis Grizzlies should be facing the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in a couple of road games at Crypto.com Arena. If Morant comes back after his two-game absence, he will play the Golden State Warriors at home on Thursday, March 9.

Arsenal and Chelsea are on high alert for ‘free agent’ Zaha

Wilfried Zaha is set to leave Crystal Palace when his contract expires at the end of the season. According to talkSPORT, the Ivorian will not renew his contract in London and will be free to join a new club for free, having rejected multiple contract offers. Despite struggling with injuries, the 30-year-old has scored six goals and provided three assists in 20 games this season. He will have no shortage of suitors if he decides on a new adventure, with Arsenal and Chelsea the top two suitors for his services. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia are also thought to be in the picture if he decides to go abroad. Read more: Ivan Toney set for lengthy ban after admitting he breached several betting rules According to talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook, the winger is admired by both Mikel Arteta and Chelsea. Speaking on Drive, Crook said: “It seems that Wilf Zaha’s stellar career at Crystal Palace could be coming to an end. “His contract is up at the end of the season – no imminent sign that he is willing to extend. “And if he is to go and achieve his ambitions of playing for a top club, it’s now or never really isn’t it? “When you look at his age, the fact that he’s available as a free agent, he either commits his future to Crystal Palace and then probably sees out his top-flight career there. “Or he goes off and tests himself, I think there will be suitors, I know Mikel Arteta is a fan, I know that Chelsea have certainly taken a look at him in the past as well. “And I think there are big clubs in Europe who would be interested in a player of Wilf Zaha’s quality.”
