Crystal Palace sack Patrick Vieira after terrible run of results

Crystal Palace have sacked their manager Patrick Vieira after a poor run of results that has seen the Eagles sit just three points off the relegation zone. Palace started the season brightly under the former Arsenal captain and were at the top half of the table briefly. But a run of 12 games without a win has left them staring down the barrel of relegation, leading to the sack of their manager. Read more: Sergio Ramos attracting interest from the MLS The south London club released a statement on the club website confirming the sack. “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made,” Palace chairman Steve Parish said in a statement.  “Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position, and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status. Patrick has given his all to the club, and we all thank him and his team for their service.” The Selhurst Park club also confirmed that Vieira’s coaching staff of Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson and Said Aigoun had also left the club, claiming that “the process to appoint a new manager is underway.”  Vieira spent less than two years in charge at Selhurst Park when he took over from Roy Hodgson in 2021. Palace’s next game is away at league leaders Arsenal on Sunday

ryan o'reilly to come back to maple leafs

Ryan O’Reilly expected to comeback to Maple Leafs before playoffs begin

Ryan O’Reilly is expected to return to the Toronto Maple Leafs before the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin, Kyle Dubas general manager announced at the NHL General Managers meetings which were held in Manalapan, Florida, on Tuesday. O’Reilly was hit in the hand by a shot from Auston Matthews in the second period of a 4-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on March 4 and was said to be out for four weeks.  The NHL regular season ends on April 14. “We’ve gotten pretty fortunate with that one,” Dubas said, “just with the type of break that it was and the fact that he was able to play and play a lot and play well for us off the hop, and then the fact that he’s probably scheduled to return before the playoffs. So, he’s going to have time to ramp back up again.” The Maple Leafs’ center resumed skating on Wednesday, working with the team’s skills coach and left the ice before practice. “Yeah he’s been feeling good anytime I’ve seen him bouncing around the facility,” Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. “He’s been feeling good since the surgery. Today was the scheduled day for him to get back on the ice so everything is progressing that way. I didn’t follow up much but I don’t think he was handling pucks or anything like that today. It was more just about getting the legs moving.” Read: NHL Expert Picks; New Jersey Devils VS Tampa Bay Lightning Predictions Today Ryan missed three games and was placed on long-term injured reserve, which means he will be out for 24 days and 10 games. Ryan O’Reilly was bought in a three-team trade with the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild on February 17th. “It’s part of the risk that you take when you acquire somebody late in the year, but it could happen to any of the players on your team at any time,” Dubas said. “I think you just have to accept that it’s part of the risk when you’re evaluating those things. O’Reilly spots five points (three goals, two assists) in eight games since he joined the Maple Leafs, plus a hat trick in a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on February 21 and 24 points (15 goals, nine assists) in 48 games this season. He won the Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy voted as MVP of the playoffs with the Blues in 2019. Sheldon Keefe the Maple Leafs’ coach said on March 7th that he expected Ryan O’Reilly to come back before the playoffs. “Obviously when we get him, you get excited and you know what he can bring, so to lose him certainly it’s tough and disappointing,” Keefe said. “But we acquired him to be healthy and ready to go for the playoffs and that will be the case. So, to that end, it’s not bad in terms of what the bigger picture is, and especially with the nature of the injury, he won’t miss much time actually on the ice and skating and, and all of that.” The Toronto Maple Leafs (40-18-9) are second in the Atlantic Division, with a three-point lead over the Tampa Bay Lightning. They also bought, Noel Acciari (Blues) and Sam Lafferty (Chicago Blackhawks), and defensemen Jake McCabe (Blackhawks), Luke Schenn (Vancouver Cannucks), and Erik Gustafsson (Washington Capitals) ahead of the 2023 NHL Trade Deadline on March 3. team usa wins advances to quarterfinals

Team USA passes Colombia to advance to quarterfinals

Team USA went into Wednesday’s game against Colombia knowing that a win will lead them to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals. From a lineup packed with superstars and some Hall Of Famers, captain, Mike Trout took the lead, going 3-for-4 with all three RBIs as the US secured its ticker to Miami in its journey to becoming the last team standing through a 3-2 victory. “I just think he’s one of the best players of all time at the end of the day,” manager Mark DeRosa said when speaking on Trout. “He was coming off 16, 17 at-bats in Spring Training and no one is in midseason form like that, but I think some of these games that we played – Mexico woke us up. He had some great ABs in the Canada game. That bullet he hit to right to start it off was pretty special. He looks really good at the dish. He’s just super confident in what he’s able to do.” The bullet in question, came after the first inning at Chase Field, a 112.5 mph laser that tore its way to the right-centre-field, fence. Trout moved to third, setting the tone for the next two times he appeared on the dish: an RBI single in the third that declared the scoring open and a two-run knock in the fifth that put Team USA ahead. Trout alongside Mookie Betts has successfully created a dynamic tandem that sits at the top of the USA orders. Betts deployed a multi-hit performance in his own right. All four balls Mookie hit were “hard hit” (north of 95+ mph), and he benefitted immensely from a Trout run-scoring knock. “All I gotta do is get on base and I’ve got him behind me,” Betts said. “I know I’m going to get pitches to hit, they don’t want to walk me to get to him with somebody on base. It’s just fun when you take off the uniform and you play for your boy.” Next up, Team USA will play Venezuela (Sat, 7 p.m ET, FOX), which has made its way through Pool D. Going forward, all 2023 World Baseball Classic games will be single elimination contests, meaning the U.S. needs three straight wins if they want to become back-to-back champions. In 2013, the moniker “Captain America’’ was attached to David Wright for acting as a powerhouse for the U.S. offense during the World Baseball Classic. Now in 2023, the new captain is another fan favourite in the person of Mike Trout. Trout has converted a historic assembly of talents with the hope of becoming back-to-back champions on the global stage. For four games, the numbers between the two have drawn parallels: Wright: 7-for-16, 1 HR, 10 RBIs, 438/.526/.750 Trought: 5-for-12, 1 HR, 6 RBIs, .419/.588/.833 “I knew signing up the atmosphere was going to be electric,” Trout said. “I talked to [Adam] Wainwright about this during the game [against] Canada. This is the funnest experience I’ve had on a baseball field – to represent your country. It’s been a blast. “Hearing ‘U-S-A’ chanted in the ninth inning, you look in the stands and people are waving the American flag – it means a lot to all of us. To play for our country, it’s been really fun.” All the focus on the All-Stars, Silver Sluggers and MVPs, that dot the starting nine, has shifted attention from the fact that Team USA has a squad that is packed with fireballers and shut-down arms. In a one-run affair, Kendall Graveman, Daniel Bard, David Bednar, Jason Adam, Devin Williams, and Ryan Pressley held the line, holding down Colombia’s lineup to only two singles with nine strikeouts over six dominating frames. “It comes down to the players. You can sit up all night and script it, plan it – they got to execute,” DeRosa said. “Could they have done [any] better? Devin Williams threw one [prior] pitch the entire pool play and looked midseason form out there. David Bednar’s heater is exploding. Jason Adam’s got electric weapons to go to. It was nice to see Bard bounce back. And Pressly’s been in the biggest moments in the big leagues the last seems like five, six years. Just awesome domination and execution by those guys.” For Colombia, the 1-3 defeat marks a disheartening end to a 2023 World Baseball Classic they started with promise. Despite a lone victory over the winners of Pool C (Mexico, 3-1), the Team will enter the qualifying stage with the hope of returning to the tournament in 2026. Great Britain, (1-3), which earned a spot in Arizona, has qualified for the next iteration of the WBC after winning against Colombia on Monday. The level of experienced Major League players in Team USA’s roster was challenging for all four opposing managers to fight through pool play. Jolbert Cabrera Colombian skipper was proud of his team’s performance and looks to continue contributing to the growth of baseball in his home country. Cabrera described what it felt like competing with a squad that has the type of skillset America has. “Today’s game, you are fighting against a monster with 15 heads,” Cabrera said via an interpreter. “You cut one down, two more come out and replace the old one.” Related: MLB BEST BETS TODAY; Japan VS Italy: World Baseball Classic Expert Picks

jamaal williams sigins three-year contract with Saints

Ex-Lions RB Jamaal Williams signed to three-year contract with Saints

Jamaal Williams has once again found a new home. The running back said yes to a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saint worth $12 million, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported. Williams got $8 million guaranteed money, according to Rapoport. The Saints, are the third NFC home Williams would be joining since he was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 NFL Draft fourth round. This move could not have come at a better time for the running back, who is entering the year after what was the best season of his career, rushing 1,066 yards and a whopping 17 touchdowns in his last campaign with the Detroit Lions. Now is the time for Williams to cash into this good fortune. Leaving Detroit will leave some eyes teary, especially since Jamaal won over thousands of devotees with his prominent, passionate role in HBO’s Hard Knocks. However, the NFL is still a serious business and if Williams were to earn his keep, it was going to be in 2023. The yearly average salary Jamaal Williams would be earning in New Orleans pales in comparison to the amount he earned in every other NFL position he held. Quarterbacks earn between $40 and $55 million annually, and Williams will make a fraction of that with the Saints. But, this position is not about his value, but a show of the state of the running back market, which was slow before Wednesday afternoon, with the Miami Dolphins retaining Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, and the Dallas Cowboys releasing Ezekiel Elliot, these are the most prominent moves. Jamaal Williams will receive $4 million a year to play in an offense spearheaded by Alvin Kamara. He is been second best for most of his career, shadowing Aaron Jones in Green Bay, D’Andre Swift in Detroit, and now Kamara in New Orleans continues the circle.  Kamara and Willimas could form an unstoppable offense duo, already backed by Derek Carr the new quarterback and a receiving corps that has Chris Olave and Michael Thomas. For this next step in Jamaal’s career, he will do it in the Big Easy. NFL News: Aaron Rodgers; My intention is to play for New York Jets; exit from Green Bay Packers ‘a matter of time’

Aaron Rodgers; My intention is to play for New York Jets; exit from Green Bay Packers ‘a matter of time’

Aaron Rodgers, quarterback to the Green Bay Packers has said:  “I made it clear that my intention was to play for the New York Jets,”; “Because I still have that fire and I want to play and I want to play in New York, it’s just a matter of getting that done at this point.” Rodgers says he intends to play for the New York Jets, and he is waiting for the Packers to complete a trade before he can actualize this plan. The long-time quarterback while speaking to Pat McAfee on his podcast, put rest the rumours flying about that he’ll likely become a Jets player in the near future. “At this point as I sit here, I think, since Friday, I made it clear that my intention was to play, and my intention was to play for the New York Jets,” Rodgers stated. “I haven’t been holding anything up at this point, it’s been compensation that the Packers are trying to get. “The Packers would like to move on, they have let me know that in so many words, and have let other people know that in direct words.” Aaron Rodgers on Wednesday confessed that he was 90 per cent sure that he was on the road to retirement when he left for four days to think about his future. He then said that he felt something shift in the way the Packers related with him, and he wished they had been more direct with their intentions at the onset of the offseason. Through ESPN, the soon-to-be ex-Packers quarterback reportedly gave a list of free agents that he would like the New York Jets to get. Rodgers according to the report would also like for the Jets to pay attention to wideout Odell Beckham Jr., including Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb Packers wide receivers, and tight end Marcedes Lewis. panama defeats italy

Panama defeats Italy to survive must-win contest

Panama entered its Saturday matchup in Pool A of the World Baseball Classic wanting to win the game to keep its dream of reaching the quarterfinals a reality while losing, would hurt Italy’s dream too. Due to this, both teams played like their survival was on the line. After a stiff, competition between defensive pitchers’ Panama won the game, 2-0. There were four pitchers who put zeros on Team Panama’s scoreboard – Harold Arauz; went four innings fulfilling his manager Luis Ortiz’s hope – striking out three, giving up only two hits. Humberto Mejia went two more and Alberto Baldonado scored two more. Javy Guerra ended things out in the ninth. For a greater part of the game, Italy’s crew measured up to Panama’s. Michele Vassalotti the starter, went four innings, struck out three and gave up only two hits. One of the two hits was a mammoth homer; with a mammoth bat flip by Jose Ramos the Dodgers’ prospect. Italy’s defense was also impressive. It was as if every inning a player was making a run-saving play. Dominic Fletcher made a running, Willie Mays-syle catch in right and Robel Garcia made a diving stab at third. The best play was probably Nicky Lopez’s full-out dive and flip to begin a rally-killing double play in the fourth. All three plays saved runs. “Yeah, it seems last night we made some mistakes on the mound, and today, we threw the ball very well and caught the ball,” Italy manager Mike Piazza recounted after the game. “We made some great defensive plays and just couldn’t seem to get that breakthrough hit.” Italy relievers Sam Gaviglio and Matteo Bocchi gave up one run over four, Gaviglio allowing Allen Córdoba’s RBI single in the seventh.  “Hitting is hard when you face good pitching,” Panama’s manager Luis Ortiz stated. “It’s hard to scratch a couple runs. But we did. We got that solo jack and we manufactured another run.” Another thing Panama had was outstanding defensive play by one of its star players here this week, Rubén Tejada. The former met went into the hole on a hard grounder delivered by Miles Mastrobuoniand fired for the out at first. Italy kicked against the play, because, it was almost impossible to accept that a player could pull off something like that. “The performance of this team is outstanding. I’m proud of these guys,” Ortiz said. “We came here with that in mind. We had to win a couple games to change the perception of people in baseball. We got good players, and we proved that in this four-game stint.” Panama completed play and now has a 2-2 record. Italy advances to 1-2 with one game pending against the Netherlands (2-0). Both teams are still eligible to advance. Italy faces the Dutch on Sunday (7 a.m. ET, FS2). Chinese Tapei (1-1) and Cuba (1-2) are in Pool A too. Each team plays against the other four in round-robin play, with the pool’s winner and runner-up moving to the quarterfinals in Tokyo against the top teams from Pool B.
