robbie ray to miss MLB season 24 start

Robbie Ray likely to miss start of ‘24 due to Tommy John surgery

The Seattle Mariners have announced that left-hander Robbie Ray had Tommy John surgery on Wednesday, including the flexor tendon repair that was previously expected. Ray had already been ruled out of games for the rest of the 2023 season, but the extra procedure meant that he will probably miss the beginning of ‘24 too. Dr Keith Meister, the director of sports medicine at Arlington-based Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine and the Rangers’ team physician, did both procedures. Scott Servais the Mariners’ manager said that Ray needing the surgery to reconstruct his UCL was in line with his expectations. “Obviously, he’s got a long road ahead of him,” Servais said. “The rehab and those situations can be challenging, but if anybody’s going to come through strong, it’ll be Robbie Ray.” Ray injured his throwing arm in his first start of 2023 and was put on the 15-day injured list the next day. It was decided that Ray would need season-ending surgery to fix a left flexor strain after a consultation on April 224, although the Tommy John surgery was not mentioned to the public up to that point. “He was in good spirits, as good as can be when you go through something like that,” said Servais, who FaceTimed with Ray ahead of Wednesday’s game in Oakland. “Hopefully he’ll come back stronger than ever.” Robbie Ray will rehabilitate at the Mariners’ Spring Training facility in Peoria, Ariz. Tommy John surgery needs a recovery period of 12 to 18 months, which means he will not be ready at the start of Spring Training in 2024. “He’s a key guy in our clubhouse,” Servais said. “Not just what he does on the mound on the day he pitches, but what he adds. We’re going to miss him. … He’s got to do what’s best for him and his family and his arm to get it back healthy and get going again.” Ray entered the second season of a five-year, $115 million contract, which has an opt-out after the 2024 season. It should also be noted that Ray’s deal with Seattle does not have any protection for the team in the case of Tommy John surgery. When Luis Castillo was extended with the Mariners after signing Ray, they added a unique club option that would be activated if Castillo needed UCL reconstruction. Robbie Ray’s absence will have long-term ramifications for the Mariner’s rotation, especially for top pitching prospect Bryce Miller. Miller stunned in his debut on Tuesday in Oakland and can hold the forte for the No.5 starter role, but he will prove he can handle his business in the Majors with Ray out longer than previously expected. The Mariners’ farm system has a number of rising arms who could enter the big league rotation picture, including Emerson Hancock (the club’s No.4 prospect per MLB Pipeline), Bryan Woo (No.6) and Prelander Berroa (No.14) at Double-A Arkansas and Taylor Dollard (No.9) at Triple-A Tacoma. jalen brunson fires up knicks fans

Jalen Brunson fires up Knicks fans after Game 2 win vs. Heat without Jimmy Butler

In what was an uphill task, the New York Knicks managed to defeat a shorthanded Miami Heat 111-105, evening out their second-round playoff series at one. Thanks to Jalen Brunson. Although Jimmy Butler was out due to an ankle injury, Miami still led for a greater part of the match until Brunson ended the onslaught. He finished with 30 points, five rebounds, and two steals behind 6-of-10 shooting from deep, and his strong presence aided the Knicks in overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit to leave the court with a victory. But this was not a one-man event, Julius Randle missed a triple-double (25 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists) in his return from an injury, and RJ Barrett (24 points) carried the offense in the early going. However, Jalen got most of the adoration from fans on social media for his performance in Tuesday’s Game 2: The Miami Heat could have easily given up and waited for Game 3 with Butler absent. They had home-court advantage no matter the results of Game 2 and were still on the road against a team that desperately needed a win. Still, they went toe-to-toe with New York for the first half and brought a three-point lead into intermission. Caleb Martin was the only player that had double figures at that point, and this balanced approach was a challenge for the New Yorkers for extended stretches. There was lower balance on the side of the home team, as Knicks not named Barrett, Randle and Brunson scored a grand total of seven points at the half. Barrett and Randle shooting outside gave a bright spot, yet the apprehension from the Crowd at Madison Garden was easy to pick up. Miami’s injured players’ list did not end with Butler, Tyler Herro, and Victor Oladipo, as Max Strus went to the locker room in the third quarter. During Strus’ absence, New York took the lead temporarily, with Randle, Brunson, and Barrett staying aggressive, but there was no separation entering winning time in the fourth quarter. When it looked like Heat were going to pull away with Martin and Gabe Vincent appearing like All-Stars, Brunson delivered multiple threes and a step-back jumper. This plus, Isaiah Hartenstein creating second chances by drawing fouls and grabbing boards and a monster corner three from Josh Hartm and there was enough power to generate a victory. Things may be different if Jimmy Butler comes back for Saturday’s Game 3 in Miami. Related News: Joel Embiid crowned 2022-23 NBA MVP over Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo

Joel Embiid crowned 2022-23 NBA MVP over Nikola Jokić, Giannis Antetokounmpo

Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers has received the NBA MVP award for the first time in his career. Embiid defeated two-time NBA MVP award winners and finalists, Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo and Denver Nuggets’ Nikola Jokić. Keith Pompey from the Philadelphia Inquirer provided the voting results which showed that Embiid secured 73 of 100 first-place votes for the historic win. Jokić clinched second place ahead of Antetokounmpo. The 76ers Center averaged a League-high 33.1 points on 54.8 per cent shooting, 10.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game this season. He propelled the 76ers to a third-place mark in the Eastern Conference with a 54-28 record. Embiid did nothing both dominated during the home stretch, with the highlight of this period being a 52-point, 13-rebound game against the Boston Celtics on 4th April. He also had a 10-game stretch from March 2-20 where he averaged 36.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per contest. Joel proved himself to be the best player in the NBA in the final months, shooting the 76ers into one of the spots for the NBA’s top title contenders. He is the first player from his team to the named MVP since Allen Iverson in 2001. He is the third Philadelphia center to receive the award after Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone. Embiid beat out some tough players to get this titled. Antetokounmpo was the best player on the best regular-season team this season. The Milwaukee Bucks finished with an NBA-leading 58-24 to win over the Boston Celtics for first place in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee felt his impact better this year, especially with three-time All-Star Khris Middleton absent most of the season with injuries. Antetokounmpo needed to play at his top form, and that was what he did and more on the journey to leading the Bucks to a great regular-season run. Giannis averaged 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. Jokić on his own part, according to perFiveThirtyEight’s RAPTOR player ratings is No.1 in RAPTOR WAR  (wins above replacement) with 20.4. The second closest to this record is Embiid at 13.3. Based on Basketball-Reference, Jokić lead the league in VORP (value over replacement player), BPM (box plus/minus), PER (player efficiency rating), true shooting percentage and win shares (total and per 48 minutes). Nikola led the Nuggets to their first-ever first-place regular-season finish in the Western Conference after Denver secured a 53-29 mark. Although all three finalists had great records that could win them the award, it was Joel Embiid who win it all this year. Jurgen Klopp Dismisses Liverpool Top-Four Chances after Win over West Ham

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has ruled out his side’s chances of breaking into the Premier League top four following their 2-1 win over West Ham on Wednesday. The Reds made it three league wins in a row in London on Wednesday, returning from an early 1-0 deficit to win 2-1 thanks to pals from Coady Gakpo and Joel Matip. The result took them six points behind the top four teams, although Manchester United and Newcastle both have games in hand. As such, Klopp is reluctant to put his team in the mix just yet.  After the game, Klopp told reporters:  “I can’t see the race yet; I can’t. That’s because we are not in the position for a race. So the only thing we can do is keep winning football games. If that puts pressure on other teams, that’s not in our hands because we don’t play them.  “We play Tottenham – that’s it from that area, I think, of teams above us. If they win all their games, that’s it for us. But I don’t think about that.  “I want us to finish the season as good as somehow possible. I want to take something out of the season for next year. If that is European competition, great. If not, we have to accept it as well and go from there. That’s what I want now.” Read more: Liverpool interested in Manchester City Outcast The Liverpool manager added that he is looking for his side to show their real face from their six remaining fixtures. “I want us, at least for a few weeks, [to] show our real face – and not the nice one, the ugly one, the nice one, the ugly one. It’s really tough to do that. So now we did it for kind of three games – three-and-a-half, the second half against Arsenal was brilliant as well – all in a different way.” “Tonight, the first half I liked the most for a long, long time, like the way we controlled the game,” he continued. “We played here plenty of times; it’s always tough. Result-wise, it looked better from time to time, but the goals we scored were then counter-attacks, stuff like that, quick reacting, all these kinds of things. We controlled the game in a way we never did before against West Ham, and I really liked that.” Liverpool return to Premier League action on Sunday when they host Tottenham, with Klopp’s side having already climbed above Spurs on goal difference.

Bayern back under-fire Thomas Tuchel as Oliver Kahn blames players for Mainz loss

Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn has defended under-fire manager Thomas Tuchel after his side’s shocking defeat to Mainz on Saturday. The Bavarians suffered their third defeat under Tuchel at the weekend, as his team were beaten 3-1 by Mainz.  The result means that Bayern have gone four games without a win in all competitions, while they have recorded just two wins in seven games under  Tuchel. Read more: Bayern Munich will ‘try everything’ to sell Sadio Mane this summer However, despite the poor results,  Kahn has backed the former Chelsea boss. According to the German legend, the coach’s job is safe, and the players should take the blame for the loss at Mainz.  “Thomas Tuchel is the last person we need to talk about now,” Khan said. “He is doing everything he can to help the boys progress. “There are 11 men on the pitch who have to work hard to achieve the goals of this club. What the team showed on the pitch is not enough.” The Bayern chief was particularly critical of Bayern’s second-half showing, with the Bavarian giants conceding three goals in 14 minutes as Mainz came from 1-0 down to secure all three points. “We played a catastrophic second half,” he added. “Who was the team that wants to become champions? It will be very difficult to become champions with such performances.” Bayern’s recent defeat means Borussia Dortmund has the upper hand in the title race. Edin Terzic’s side moved to the top of the table, one point ahead of Bayern, thanks to a 4-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt 4-0 in their weekend game. Both sides now have just five games left to play.

Juventus 15-point deduction temporarily REVOKED

Juventus have successfully appealed their 15-point deduction in Serie A, as the penalty have not been revoked. The Old Lady were slapped with a 15-point dediti9in February following allegations of financial rascality and mismanagement by the club over some seasons. They were charged for false corporate communications, false communications to the stock market and obstruction of watchdog agencies. This led to the club’s offices being raided by CONSOB – the finance regulator responsible for monitoring club dealings on the stock exchange – in November 2021 to seize documents relating to the transfers under scrutiny. Read more: Pep Guardiola says his players are exhausted after Man City reach third straight Champions League semi-final An investigation was opened on the club, and the entire Juventus board – including Andrea Agnelli and Pavel Nedved – resigned late last year. Early this year, they were handed a point deduction due to the charges, taking them out of the top four race.  But that has been revoked, meaning Massimiliano Allegri’s side now have a great chance of qualifying for the Champions League. With 15 points added back, the Italian giants move up to third with 59 points. Meanwhile. AC Milan and Inter drop down to fifth and sixth in the Serie A table.  Meanwhile, the number one spot is off the table, with Napoli expected to secure the title imminently. Still, the Bianconeri could steal the second spot from Lazio with a good run of form.

lafc wins el trafico

LAFC claim first El Trafico road win over LA Galaxy

The 18th edition of one of the best long-standing rivalries in Major League Soccer delivered fantastic goals, another effort from the derby’s goal king and a feat that has never been achieved before, as LAFC celebrated its first Trafico road win, defeating the winless LA Galaxy, 3-2 Sunday afternoon. See: Granit Xhaka plays down criticism from Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after West Ham draw “It feels great. I feel like we showed many times that we’re better than them, but for some reason anytime we play here it’s a crazy start,” Carlos Vela said. “After this one, I hope we win more often here and show every time that we play LA Galaxy that we’re the team of this city.” Vela played a key role in LAFC’s historic win, kicking off the scoring with a 22nd-minute golazo and adding a second from the penalty spot. This brings his total score to 12 goals, which is more than any other player in EL Trafico history. “Carlos has a very special left leg and his football IQ is also off the charts,” LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo said. “Carlos has done that time and time again and it’s great to see that, it’s great to see him finishing in the manner that he finishes his chances. He doesn’t get many many chances, but he’s there when we need him and that’s why he is at LAFC and nobody else.” LAFC: Short rest, no problem LAFC’s EL Trafico win comes days after the club secured a spot in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals where they’ll face Philadelphia Union in a rematch of last season’s historic MLS Cup – which was won by LAFC using penalty kicks. The club has had a busy stretch of games, but they emerged from it as the only unbeaten team in Major League Soccer after Matchday 8 (a 5W-0L-2D record). “It’s very difficult to win a game in this league, especially on the road. This was also our fifth game in two weeks and I think we saw a little bit of that tonight,” Cherundolo said. “To win here and to continue in the Champions League in the fashion we did, and seeing where we are on the table, makes it much easier to forgive the guys for a rather average to below average performance. “For them to find a way to win after what they’ve been through over the past couple of weeks is absolutely excellent and speaks about their mentality and where we are as a group.” LA Galaxy: defeated but encouraged LA Galaxy joined Sporting Kansas City to be the only two teams in MLS that are winless in 2023 (0W-4L-3D record). However, Galaxy coach Greg Vanney saw a glimmer of hope in his team’s play. Tyler Bord scored an outstanding goal from distance, the longest for the Galaxy in MLS since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s 40-yard strike on his LA debut in 2018, via Opta. Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez started his first match of the season in his return from injury and played the entire 90 minutes, providing an emotional spark to a team that desperately needed one. And Riqui Puig was sensational with Vanney saying he played his “best game of the season so far.” However, the club were brought down by self-inflicted wounds, delivering LAFC’s goals on a gold platter. “For a lot of the day, I was pleased with our performance, I was pleased with our effort, our energy,” Vanney said. “We punished ourselves today. Today we killed ourselves and that’s unfortunate against a good team that has momentum in their favor.” After a steep turnover by Gaston Brugman in midfield that assisted Vela’s first goal, the Galaxy entered the half courtesy of Boyd’s first MLS goal. But “two colossal mistakes” two minutes apart led to Vela’s second goal and Ryan Hollingshead’s goal giving the guests a 3-1 lead with 20 minutes to go. “I’m proud of the guys’ effort. This is an interesting week for everybody. But the effort for the guys was fantastic. And I thought at times our performance was fantastic,” Vanney said. “I’ve never been more sure about this group’s ability to do something special this season than today. We’ve got to cut out the part where we hurt ourselves to make the other team beat us.” Chicarito described it as LA Galaxy’s best play of the season and, although he said he hates to lose, he will take a loss in the way they did to LAFC over the 3-0 defeat Houston Dynamo FC dealt with them on Matchday 7. “Today I think regardless of the result, it was the best performance in my opinion that we did because honestly if LAFC is considered the best team in the league, we outplayed them,” he said. “The problem is we did [a] very naive mistake, all of us.” LAFC intends to maintain their hot start to the season when they visit Nashville SC Saturday (8:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass), while the Galaxy will host Austin FC Saturday (10:30 pm ET | MLS Season Pass).

mlb series to watch

7 MLB series to watch this week

Tampa Bay Rays’ historic win streak eventually came to an end, but there are still many to pay attention to in the MLB landscape. The coming week entails some high-profile matchups, including two matchups between teams that won 100-plus games last season that make up an MLB series. See the MLS 2023 Regular Season Schedule. These are 7 MLB series during the week of April 17: Brewers at Mariners 3 games (Monday – Wednesday) Head to head: The Milwaukee Brewers and Seattle Mariners have not played against each other since June 2019, when the Mariners took two out of three games in Milwaukee.  Both were in the American League from 1977-97, before the 1998 realignment when Arizona and Tampa Bay joined MLB. Storyline: Will this be the Brewers’ year? Milwaukee’s 11-5 record trails just the Braves (12-4) in the National League, and the Brewers’ +28 differential ranks second in the Majors, behind the Rays (+72).  Milwaukee has made the playoffs in four of the past five seasons, and although it is still early to tell, this year’s team looks as good as can be. Watch for: Brian Anderson. After Six years with the Marlins, the third baseman has been great in his debut season with the Brewers.  He leads the team with 14 RBIs, and he is one of the three Milwaukee players with an OPS of up to .850 (Rowdy Tellez, Garrett Mitchell). Phillies at White Sox 3 games (Monday – Wednesday) Head to head: The Phillies and Sox have not played since August 2019, when the White Sox took two out of three games in Philadelphia. Storyline: Both sides had high expectations entering 2023, especially the Phillies after their run in the World Series last year. They enter this series with 6-10 records. Although the expanded playoff simplifies things, both teams must work to change things. Look out for: Brandon Marsh. Philadelphia’s tough start has been no fault of Marsh’s, who broke out in this third MLB season. Marsh has a line of .378/.440/.756, the last one which leads all the players with 40 plate appearances this season. Blue Jays at Astros 3 games (Monday – Wednesday) Head to head: Toronto went 4-2 against Houston in 2022, with all four winnings gotten in one run. Toronto took two out of three in each series (one in Houston, one in Toronto). Storyline: Will the Astros infield live up to expectations at the MLB series? José Abreu, Jose Altuve, Jeremy Peña, and Alex Bregman were supposed to be the best infielders in MLB this season. But Altuve fractured a thumb in the World Baseball Classic, and the other three have OPS values below .700, a core factor in Houston’s disappointing beginning. Look out for: Matt Chapman. Chapman has dominated all-around this season, heading all skilled hitters with a 1.204 OPS. Via Statcast, his 13 barrels are also the most in the big leagues. Braves at Padres 3 games (Monday – Wednesday) Head to head: Atlanta and San Diego have already played this season, with the Padres taking three of four games in Atlanta earlier in April. The Padres were 4-3 against the Braves in 2022. Storyline: Clash of NL titans: While these teams have not met in a postseason since the 1990s, they have both been mainstays in the playoffs in recent years, with San Diego reaching two of the last three postseasons and Atlanta reaching each of the last five.  It is no surprise that the two sides are part of the favourites to win the NL this season. Watch out for: Xander Bogaerts. Although it is still early, Bogaerts lived up to his 11-year contract so far. He heads the Padres in a litany of offensive stats, including batting average (.354), on-base percentage (.427) and slugging percentage (.585). Mets at Dodgers 3 games (Monday – Wednesday) Head to head: The New York Mets were 4-3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022. They shared a four-game series in Los Angeles, and the Mets took two out of three in New York. Storyline: Which of these reigning 100-win teams can get back to this level at the MLB series? The Mets and Dodgers were two of MLB’s four 100-win teams last campaign, alongside the Astros and Braves. However, whether it was because of free agency (e.g. Chris Bassitt, Jacob deGrom, Trea Turner. Justin Turner) or injured players (Edwin Díaz, Gavin Lux, Tony Gonsolin), both sides lost core members and must master how to adapt. Watch out for: Noah Syndergaard. While he struggled this season (0-2, 5.63 ERA), this will be the first time in a long while that this ex-Met faces off against his old team since he refused New York’s qualifying offer in free agency after the 2021 season. Syndergaard is expected to start on Wednesday. Angels at Yankees 3 games (Tuesday – Thursday) Head to head: The Yankees went 4-2 against Los Angeles in 2022. The Yankees won a three-game home series but lost two of three in Los Angeles. Storyline: Star power. This MLB series fixture will feature two top candidates in the 2022 AL MVP race, with last year’s winner Aaron Judge and runner-up Shohei Ohtani. Mike Trout finished eighth in the voting, despite playing only 119 games.  Ohtani is not expected to start on the mound in this series, but fans will still witness some of the world’s best players strive to outdo each other. Watch out for: Logan O’Hoppe. Before the season O’Hoppe (a New Yorker) was thought to be the team leader in home runs on a roster with Trout and Ohtani on it. But this is the case for the rookie catcher, whose team-high four home runs have been a pleasant surprise. Astros at Braves 3 games (Friday – Sunday) Head to head: The Atlanta Braves went 2-1 against the Houston Astros in 2022, during a three-game series in Atlanta in August. They also had a match in the 2021 World Series, but the Braves won in six games. Storyline:

Historic win streak ends shakes up Power Rankings

The Rays FINALLY lost, and it happened twice. While the Rays will not be going 162-0 this year or 161-1 either, they have reaffirmed their status as contenders moving forward. Their loss, however, shook the power rankings this week. Whether they go .500 the remainder of the season, they’ll win 87 games. And they definitely look like a team that will be better than .500 for the rest of the season. However, the Rays may not be the best team in baseball, at least not in this Power Rankings. They dropped one spot this week, to No.2. But it is a bit hard to argue with the No.1 team: they appear menacing so far. Here are the power rankings for the week. Check MLB standings. Biggest Jump: The Rangers took two out of three from the Royals at the beginning of the week, and meted out the same punishment against their rivals from Houston over the weekend. The most interesting thing about this club has been the pitching, which holds a top-10 spot in the Majors.  And the best starter has been Martín Pérez again, not Jacob deGrom. Biggest Drop: Two teams dropped five spots: The San Diego Padres, lost two out of three to the Mets and three of four to the Brewers, they look like a team that needs Fernando Tatis Jr. back. The Cardinals won two out of three in Colorado but could barely muster a split at home against the Pirates are in fourth place in the NL Central. Power Rankings Top 5: 1. Braves, 12-4 (last week: 2) The Rays’ unbeaten reign is history. The Atlanta Braves are the new team with a cool streak now, who went 6-0 on the week, defeating the Reds and the Royals.  They have three players with an OPS over 1.000: Mat Olson, Ronald Acuña Jr. and, the team’s leader in that category, Sean Murphy, who is getting on base at a .446 clip.  Atlanta also has a top-10 pitching staff right now. They have another fun series set up to start the week against the Padres in San Diego, but it’s the Padres who should be afraid: The Braves are on a roll already. 2. Rays, 14-2 (last week: 1) A 5-2 week dropped the Rays a spot in the rankings, even if both losses were on the road against the Blue Jays, also one of the best baseball teams. Shane McClanahan ended the Rays’ two-game skid – only when a player has won their first 13 games can two losses be counted as a ”skid”. After another gem on Sunday McClanahan is now 4-0 with a 1.57 ERA. The Rays get a few middle-of-the-country teams this week. The Reds are on the road and the White Sox at the Trop. 3. Blue Jays, 10-6 (last week:7) Beating the team that won 13 in a row twice is a fantastic way to rise in the rankings. Matt Chapman’s impressive contract-year resurgence has been the discussion of the first couple of weeks, but the Blue Jays look more put together than they did last season, particularly on defense. They tied for the second-best record in the American League, which secured them a four-game deficit in the AL East. That is the same distance from first place as Colorado is currently. 4. Yankees, 10-6 (last week:4 ) Keeping up in the AL East is difficult, and the New York Yankees dropped a game during a 4-3 week. But the biggest challenge is probably Giancarlo Stanton’s hamstring injury which put him on the injured list. Aaron Judge has had more help in the lineup this season so far, courtesy of Anthony Rizzo, Gleyber Torres, and DJ LeMahieu being off to excellent starts. But Stanton’s absence is not encouraging. 5. Astros, 7-9 (last week: 6) The Houston Astros were No.1 in the first power rankings of the season, and even with a slow start, they will not fall too far behind. They had a great series with the incredible Rangers over the weekend, and their schedule will get tougher in the coming weeks. Houston’s next four opponents are all teams that made the playoffs last season: the Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies at home, and the Atlanta Braves and Rays on the road. 6. Brewers (8) 7. Dodgers (3) 8. Twins (10) 9. Mets (9) 10. Padres (5) 11. Guardians (11) 12. Rangers (18) 13. Angels (15) 14. Orioles (16) 15. Mariners (14) 16. D-backs (20) 17. Cardinals (12) 18. Cubs (21) 19. Pirates (24) 20. Phillies (13) 21. White Sox (17) 22. Red Sox (22) 23. Marlins (23) 24. Giants (19) 25. Reds (25) 26. Rockies (27) 27. Royals (26) 28. Tigers (28) 29. Nationals (29) 30.
