Wolfsburg’s 2-0 win over Freiburg the last time out helped them stop a run of eight games without a win (5 losses and 3 draws), and 3 games without a goal. They would now look to move clear of the relegation zone with another win here. However, if they lose here and Mainz wins against Freiburg, they could find themselves inside the bottom three by the start of next week. They have the joint-poorest home record in the league this season with just 13 points collected at home, same as Cologne. They have netted in 12 of their last 13 games at home and it would be interesting to see if they can score and shut out Augsburg in this game. Augsburg are also struggling and are not safe from relegation just yet. They are winless in three games and desperately needs to get some winning run together before the season comes to an end. They started very brightly against Bayern Munich the last time out, taking the lead via an own goal, but they later capitulated and ended up losing 4-1 to leave themselves just 7 points ahead of their host in this game with 5 games left.

Sporting Lisbon’s loss in the first leg of this game was followed by some theatrics after the club presidents slated the team on Facebook. 19 players reacted to the post by demanding an apology, the president reacted back by telling the 19 players that they were suspended. Well, no one was suspended and the team came together to get a 2-0 win at the weekend, they would be looking to overturn their 2-0 in the first leg here, but that would be easier said than done. Atletico Madrid have lived up to the expectations as favourites to win the Europa League this season. They were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage after a truly poor campaign, but they have since won 5 games on the bounce in this competition, netting 15 goals in the process. Antoine Griezmann’s form has been a big reason that they are having a good season as the French man has netted 12 times in his last 9 games including against Real Madrid at the weekend and in the first leg of this match.

SS Lazio’s season is looking like it would have a perfect ending after their 2-1 win over Udinese helped them climb to third in the Italian league. Losses for Roma and Inter played to their advantage in that case, but they are also looking to win the Europa League and secure passage to the Champions League group stage. The Italians hold a 4-2 advantage from the first leg and they head to Austria in great attacking form that has seen them score 12 goals in their last 3 games. Their attack has been helped mainly by the form of Ciro Immobile who netted his 27th goal in all competitions, can Salzburg stop him from netting here? Salzburg would be worried by the attacking form of their visitors despite their loss in Rome last week being their first in Europe this season. They followed that up with another loss in the Austrian league against LASK Linz, and they face a Lazio side that has scored at least twice in their last four games away from home. This seems to be the end of the road for them especially as they have just two wins from their last six games in this competition.

When this draw was made, Juve players and their fans would have been delighted that they would finally avenge their loss in last season’s final and maybe match on to win the Champions League finally. However, Christiano Ronaldo had other plans and the former Manchester United star helped Los Blancos to a 3-0 win in Turin, making this return leg a tough one for the Italians. Los Blancos drew their very next game against Atletico Madrid, but with 15 points already separating them from Barcelona, they are now focused on winning the Champions League instead. They have won 11 of their last 13 games in all competitions, losing on only one occasion. Juventus may face an impossible task here, but they are an evidently talented side. They lead the Serie A by 4 points and defeated Benevento 4-2 in their very last game. On the whole, they have tasted victory 17 times out of their last 22 games. They have not had the best of campaigns in the Champions League this season, as they have won just 4 times in their 10 matches so far and lost 3-0 at Barcelona earlier in the season. Real Madrid have three wins, two draws and two losses from their last seven games against the Old Ladies, while Juve have won only once on their last 5 visits to the Bernabeu.

A few months ago it appeared as though Manchester City would win the impressive quadruple under Pep Guardiola. However, things have changed so much that except a miraculous result in this match, the best they can get would be a league and Carabao Cup double. The Cityzens were overwhelmed by Liverpool in the first leg of this match and the Reds raced to a 3-0 lead before 4o minutes. At the weekend, Pep Guardiola’s men suffered another defeat against Manchester United, this time at home.They raced to a 2-0 but a defensive collapse saw them lose the game 3-2 to the Red Devils. Liverpool meanwhile drew at Everton after a much-changed side struggled to break down the Toffees but they still managed to remain unbeaten against the Blues, 17 games gone now.   Liverpool have scored at least 2 goals in 11 of their last 14 away games in all competitions and that would worry Pep Guardiola as he knows a Liverpool away goal would require them to score at least 5 goals. The Reds have not lost any game by more than 1 goal since October last year, and they have won seven of their last ten games, losing just once and scoring 24 goals in that time.

Barcelona would be happy to have the first leg of this game by 4-1 as they play Valencia at the weekend and would not want to over-exert themselves in this game. They needed two own goals to open the scoring at Camp Nou but they would not mind as long as it brought them the win. Roma failed to recover from their loss to Barcelona in the first leg and they went on to lose their very next game 2-0 at home to Fiorentina. They play SS Lazio next after this game and they would be looking to get a good result here to keep their spirit up before that derby. Barcelona won their next match at the weekend 3-1 against Leganes and they would be in the best of spirit especially with Lionel Messi back. They are now unbeaten in their last 19 games since they lost to Espanyol in Copa Del Rey. Barca have not lost a Champions League game since they lost to Juventus last season. Roma have kept four clean sheets at home this season and all but one of their home Champions League games have ended in under 2.5 goals.  Barcelona have also seen less than 2.5 goals scored in all of their away Champions League games this season.
