Tuchel Urges Bellingham to Channel ‘Fire’ Without Overwhelming England Teammates

England manager Thomas Tuchel wants Jude Bellingham to use his competitive fire to inspire – not intimidate – his teammates. The Real Madrid midfielder had to be held back by Tuchel after England’s 3-1  loss to Senegal on Tuesday, a historic result that marked the first-ever win for an African team over England. Bellingham believed he had equalized late in the game, only for the goal to be controversially disallowed before Senegal sealed the win in stoppage time. Tuchel said Bellingham’s passion is a strength but warned it must be controlled.  Tuchel has yet to convince in his new role, with three unconvincing wins over Albania, Latvia, and Andorra, followed by this defeat. Still, he boasts a talented squad and was brought in to end England’s major trophy drought, dating back to 1966. Finding the right balance remains a top priority.

Championship Play-Off Final Highlights Premier League Promotion Challenges

Sunderland and Sheffield United face off in Saturday’s Championship play-off final, with Premier League riches awaiting the winner.  However, recent history shows the promotion dream can quickly sour, as all three sides promoted in the past two seasons have been relegated back immediately, a phenomenon previously only seen once in 1997/98. The widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship is clear. The bottom three Premier League teams over the last two seasons have amassed historically low points totals, with Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United collecting just 66 points last year, and this season’s relegation trio, Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton, on track to break that record with only 59 points combined. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna commented on the challenge: “It’s clear that the gap is big… 17 teams have two full seasons of Premier League money and everything that comes with that. And it makes it harder for everyone to catch up.” Sheffield United earned £110 million from Premier League TV and commercial revenues last season despite finishing last, and when parachute payments over three years are included, a single Premier League season can exceed £200 million in revenue. The English Football League (EFL) is concerned about how these parachute payments distort the Championship’s competitive balance and sustainability. If Sheffield United join Leeds and Burnley in promotion this season, six of the last nine promoted clubs would have returned immediately after relegation. EFL chairman Rick Parry said, “The impact of these payments on the competitive balance of the Championship, and on the sustainability of all other clubs, is a major concern.”

Arsenal Learn Stunning Asking Price to Sign Sesko

Arsenal have been told they must pay at least €110 million (£92.5m) to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. The Gunners have identified Sesko as a key target in their search for a new centre-forward this summer.  According to The Telegraph, initial enquiries made to Leipzig were met with a firm stance from the German club. They are pointing to the striker’s contract, which runs until 2029. Leipzig are confident in their position and have no plans to sell unless their valuation is met. Sesko is viewed as a strong alternative to Sporting Lisbon  striker Viktor Gyokeres. His representatives reportedly held talks with Arsenal officials last weekend.

Liverpool Make £109 Million Bid Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated midfielder Florian Wirtz. They have put up a second, improved bid worth £109 million, according to reports on Friday. The Premier League champions’ new offer reportedly includes add-on clauses that could make Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.  Despite interest from Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and Premier League rivals Manchester City, Wirtz is believed to have communicated to Leverkusen his strong desire to join Liverpool ahead of next season. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes confirmed earlier this week that Liverpool had “concrete interest” in the 22-year-old midfielder.  However, Leverkusen CEO Fernando Carro previously insisted Wirtz would not be allowed to leave for less than £125 million. Florian Wirtz emerged as one of Europe’s most promising young playmakers after playing a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s first Bundesliga title win in the 2023-24 season.  He was also named Bundesliga Player of the Season for his performances. This campaign, Wirtz featured in 31 Bundesliga games, scoring 10 goals as Leverkusen finished runners-up to Bayern Munich.  Since his debut at 17 after moving from Cologne in 2020, Wirtz has scored 57 goals in 197 appearances for Leverkusen.
