jayson tatum, jaylen brown are motivated for another title run

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown are motivated for another title run

Jayson Tatum came back for training camp with a new back tattoo, another gold medal and a chip on his shoulder. He was accompanied by trusty colleague Jaylen Brown.  Tatum appeared for his eighth NBA season on Tuesday after helping the Boston Celtics win an 18th championship and joining the U.S team for its victory at the Paris Olympics. He did all that to become a supporting character and got benched for two matches in the middle of the tournament.  “In real time, it was tough,” Tatum said at the Celtics Media Day, acknowledging “I guess you could say that” it would motivate him when the Celtics try to repeat as NBA champions. “Did I need any extra motivation coming into the season? No,” said Tatum, whose new ink is a picture of himself cradling the championship trophy. “It was a unique circumstance — something I haven’t experienced before in my playing career. But I’m a believer that everything happens for a reason.” Boston return to practice on Wednesday, and the biggest threat to a repeat championship may be how complacent they could be after winning the first one. That is why Tatum’s Olympic disgrace might just be what Joe Mazzulla needs to keep his star player on track.  He was also overlooked for Finals MVP in favor of his teammate Jaylen Brown, who due to coming into the league a year earlier, was the highest-paid player in the NBA.  “Joe was probably the happiest person in the world that I didn’t win Finals MVP, and I didn’t play in two of the games of the Olympics,” Tatum said. “So that was odd. But if you know Joe, that makes sense.” Also smarting from a wounded ego is Brown, who was not chosen to join the Olympic squad and used social media to complain about being snubbed. Reporters wasted no time in asking him about it.  “Damn. Question No. 1,” Brown said with a laugh. “Don’t I get to warm up a little?” “The past is the past,” he said. “I’m extremely motivated, for obvious reasons. I’m ready to get after it.” The Celtics had the shortest offense in the NBA, defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the Finals on June 17. They then go back to practice a week earlier than most of the league because they open the preseason in Abu Dhabi on October 4th. Three of them did not get the summer off: Tatum, Jrue Holiday, and Derrick White all competed for the United States at France.  Holiday said the break was enough. “I love this game, so basketball isn’t like a hassle to me or anything,” he said. “I guess I love this job that I have. I had some great experiences this summer, so I wouldn’t trade that for anything.” Boston is back with the exact roster that won it all: Fifteen players return from last year’s team, including their top 11 scorers. The last NBA team to win back-to-back titles was the Golden State Warriors, who won three in four seasons from 2015-18. “It was never about trying to just win one,” Tatum said. “All the guys I looked up to growing up won at least one championship. Now it’s just a conversation of  how great are you trying to be?”

ravens sign pass rusher yannick ngakoue to practice squad

Ravens sign pass rusher Yannick Ngakoue to practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens are bringing back a familiar face to bolster its pass rush. They signed edge rusher Yannick Ngakoue to their practice squad, according to the NFL’s transaction wire.  ESPN reported the news first.  Ngakoue, had been wasting on the free-agent market all offseason and three weeks into the 2024 season. The ninth-year defensive end appeared in 13 matches for the Chicago Bears in 2023, totaling four sacks, six tackles for loss and seven QB hits.  Joining the Ravens will be Ngakoue’s sixth change in residence in five years; he has played for the Jaguars, Vikings, Ravens, Raiders, Colts, Bears and is now back to Baltimore since 2019. His last stint with the Ravens was only for nine games in 2020, when he recorded three sacks for John Harbaugh and Co. after a midseason transfer from Minnesota.  Ngakoue will want to bring spice to a 2024 Baltimore defense currently ranking 17th in sack rate and 32nd in passing yards permitted per match (291.7).  He said in May that he wanted to “re-establish’’ himself as one of the best pass rushers in the NFL and wait for the “perfect opportunity’’ to arise. Ngakoue seems to have found one with the Ravens.  League enthusiasts expect to see him make his debut for Baltimore this week when they host the Buffalo Bills (2-0) on Sunday Night Football on September 29th.

malik nabers "having a lot of fun' in sensational start

Giants WR Malik Nabers ‘having a lot of fun’ in sensational start: ‘Dream come true’

Over his first three weeks at the NFL, Malik Nabers has become a must-watch talent. The rookie WR has swiftly risen in the ranks as one of the league’s most spectacular wide receivers. It turns out Nabers is enjoying his time with the New York Giants as much as fans tuning in to watch his awe striking catches and historic feats.  “I’m having a lot of fun, a dream come true,” Nabers said Tuesday, via team transcript. So far, he has been a dream come true for a stagnant Giants offense, giving fans something to be thrilled about and a long absent dynamic delivery.  Even when New York dropped their first two matches of the term, Nabers was delivering highlights and receiving attention. Now, the Giants have secured their first victory of the term, a 21-15 win over the Cleveland Browns where Nabers racked in eight catches for 78 yards and a couple of touchdowns.  The rookie became the youngest WR in NFL history with two TD catches in a match, according to NFL Research. In those eight receptions were two outstanding grabs: the first when he skied above Cleveland cornerback Martin Emerson to pull a 28-year again along the sideline; the second an excellent 3-yard score where he skied for the ball before twisting his body to get  both feet inside the end zone.  “They were good catches, but I’ve made some way better catches than that,” said Nabers, the 2024 NFL Draft’s sixth-overall selection. “I’m not surprised by it, it’s just how I play, it’s how I am.” Following his latest showing, Nabers enters Thursday night’s Week 4 opener against the Dallas Cowboys with 23 catches, 271 receiving yards and a league-high three TD grabs. Those numbers make him the first player in league history with 20-plus catches and three or more TD grabs in his first three career matches, according to NFL Research.  Now he is ready for his prime-time debut, but to him it is just another match against another team.  “It’s a regular game,” he said of playing on Thursday night. And it all the same competing against the Cowboys, too, no matter how high-profile they might be.  “It’s football,” he said. “A game is a game. Every time I go out there, a game is a game. No matter what day it is, a game is a game.”

hall ready to play for blackhawks after healing from knee injury

Hall ready to play for Blackhawks after healing from knee injury

Taylor Hall has not played for the Chicago Blackhawks since November 19th, 2023. Eight days later, he had a season-ending surgery to fix a torn ACL in his right knee. “Even an exhibition game is going to feel like something I haven’t done in a long time. That’s exciting,” said Hall, who is expected to play against the Detroit Red Wings in the Blackhawks’ preseason opener at United Center on Wednesday (8 p.m. ET). “In the last, I don’t know, 14-16 months, I’ve played 10 games, so I can’t wait to play games and be a hockey player again.” It was a frustrating wait for Hall who the Blackhawks signed from the Boston Bruins, along with forward Nick Folingo on June 26th, 2023. He was expected to be Connor Bedard’s linemate, but injuries limited him to 10 matches, where he had four points (two goals and two assists).  And it has been apparent since the beginning of camp, that the forward is ready to be a significant part of the Blackhawks this campaign.  “He’s all business right now, just the way we want to conduct ourselves as a team and he’s driving that pace out there,” Blackhawks coach Luke Richardson said of Hall. “That’s the way he likes to play. “I remember him in New Jersey being the MVP of the League (won the Hart Trophy in 2017-18) and that’s the way he played. We’re expecting him fully healthy to kind of continue getting to where he was just getting to when he got injured unfortunately in the early part of November.” Hall has 697 points (266 goals, 431 assists) in 832 matches for the Oilers, New Jersey Devils, Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins and Blackhawks.  Foligno said Hall has been “flying” during camp training. “His speed is so lethal and the size that he is (6-foot-1, 210 pounds), it’s a dangerous combination when you have him flying down the wing,” said Foligno, who was named Blackhawks captain Sept. 18. “I’m sure [Bedard] is excited to have him and whoever plays with him. He’s a guy who can drive a line himself too. I’m thrilled for him that he’s back around the guys and playing hockey, which he loves.” Bedard discussed with Hall a lot last term about the expectations of being a No.1 pick, something he knew weekly. They teamed up early, with Hall getting the primary assist on Bedard’s first NHL goal, a wraparound in a 3-1 defeat to the Bruins on October 11th, 2023.  “He’s obviously a great player and someone we really missed last year, not only on the ice, but in the room as well,” Bedard said. “He’s a guy everyone really likes, really respects. Having a guy like that, another leader in our room, is going to be huge, and then he’s going to make a big impact for us on the ice.” To prepare for the season, Hall trained in Vail, Colorado with other players such as Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner.  He said he trained in Vail in the past, before COVID-19. “It’s the highest elevated hockey rink in North America, so that’s about as tough of skates as you can get. But it was fun,” Hall said. “I just wanted to go and test myself against some of the best players in the League and at that altitude, so that was a time of fun and really was a measuring stick for how my knee felt, how my cardio was and how I felt as a hockey player. Hopefully that can give me a good push coming into this year.” He said he was anticipating the training camp schedule even before it was released. Missing most of last term was hard for him, but the urge to get back on the ice, to play matches again, has been building. Now he’s ready to go. “It’s special for me and it really brings a lot of things to light,” Hall said. “It makes me be appreciative to be out here because I missed so much time. If there’s any positives I can take, it’s just the clarity and gratitude that I have to just be playing hockey again because I love it and I think it’s kind of what I was born to do. So to be back out here again is just a blast.”

auston matthews leaves maple leafs practice

Auston Matthews leaves Maple Leafs practice

The 2024-25 NHL training camp has begun, and there’s already some development in the Toronto Maple Leafs camp. Auston Matthews has exited halfway through practice. Matthews departed on Tuesday due to what coach Craig Berube described as an “upper-body thing,” although he said the issue is nothing to be concerned about.  “It’s nothing serious,” Berube said. “He should be fine.” The Toronto captain centered a line between left winger Steven Lorentz and right winger Mitch Marner before leaving practice.  Matthews scored one goal and was plus-1 in his preseason debut, a 6-5 overtime defeat to the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.  Forward Calle Jarnkrok missed practice on Tuesday and is day to day with a lower-body injury Jarnkrok was minus-1 Sunday. Lorentz, who is going to the Maple Leafs training camp on a professional tryout, went to practice for the first time since September 19th, missing the last three day due to an upper-body injury.  Related: Peterka anticipates homecoming at Global Series Challenge Germany.

orioles overcome setbacks to make playoffs

Orioles overcome setbacks to make playoffs: ‘We’re ready to go’

The Baltimore Orioles traveled through a thorny path, but they still arrived at their expected destination.  Baltimore are going into October with a postseason spot thanks to their 5-3 victory over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium and the Twins’ defeat to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. They are confident that they are yet to give their best performance.  “Our guys are really happy to take this step. But for us, we’re ready to go,” catcher Adley Rutschman said. “We’re trying to get better. We’re setting ourselves up for a playoff run right now, and I think our guys are just really excited to get going.” In 2023, the Orioles fought its way to 101 victories without many challenges. They were never swept. They never lost more than four straight matches. They cruised to their first American League title since ‘14 and first postseason appearance since ‘16.  In 2024, the Orioles’ ride was not as smooth. They have had sweeps. There were two five-game losing streaks. The second half has been filled with problems due to lots of injuries and inconsistent play.  “I’m so proud of this group,” manager Brandon Hyde said in his pre-celebration speech to the O’s. “We have dealt with so much crap the last three months. And you guys continue to fight.” Much of the Orioles season’s first half was like a continuation of last year. They were a season-high 24 matches above .500 (49025) on June 20, when they defeated the Yankees, 17-5, and sent the message that they were once again a threat in the AL East.  However, Baltimore could not establish a lot of momentum at any time in the second half, during which it was 29-32. It has not won more than three matches in a row since before the All-Star break. Similarly, it has not conceded more than three in a row over that span, either.  The O’s suffered from injuries throughout the summer, with many key players – All-Star infielder Jordan Westburg, first baseman Ryan Mountcastle, right-hander Grayson Rodriguez, missing crucial periods of time.  “We came into the year, very high expectations, and those expectations were kind of there through July. And then, we hit a skid, and I think the expectations dropped and a little bit of nervousness set in,” general manager Mike Elias said. “Now, we’ve got the biggest milestone here. … It’s possible that we enter into the playoffs with a little different flow than we had last year. At least that’s my hope.”

padres deliver game-ending triple to defeate dodgers

Padres deliver game-ending triple to defeat Dodgers, win playoff spot

The San Diego Padres have a flair for the dramatics. They win matches they should not win. They have headed the NL West contest to the wire, when nobody expected them to.  But even by their standards, they took that theatrics to the next level on Tuesday night: The Padres turned a game-ending triple play at Dodger Stadium to steal a postseason place, leaving Shohei Ohtani and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the on-deck circle. “Couldn’t script that any better,” said Padres manager Mike Shildt. Manny Machado began an excellent around-the-horn triple play to end a 4-2 Padres win at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday, causing loud celebrations in the visitor’s fan box. San Diego became the first team in league history to secure a postseason spot with a game-ending triple play.  Miguel Rojas, who was geared up to hit earlier in the at-bat, struck a quick grounder to Machado. The third baseman stepped on the bag, sending the ball to Jake Cronenworth at second, who turned and threw to Donovan Solano at first. It was only the ninth triple play in Padres history, and the first since Chase Headley did the same around-the-horn turn in 2010.  “As soon as he hit it, I’m like ‘Let’s go,’” Machado said. And with that, San Diego won a berth in the postseason after losing out in 2023. After the game, a champagne-soaked Machado was asked about beloved late owner Peter Seidler, who passed away last November. He said, “He’s been with us all year.” Then he added this … “In a tough spot there with Ohtani in the on-deck circle, we turn a triple play to end the game, against one of the best teams in baseball?” Machado said. “I mean, he’s looking upon us.”
