Two Dead, Officer in Coma During PSG Champions League Celebrations

What should have been a Champions League jubilation turned tragic in France as celebrations of PSG’s 5-0 triumph over Inter Milan spiraled into chaos. The traumatic night left two people dead, a police officer in a coma, and hundreds under arrest. According to France’s interior ministry, 491 arrests were made in Paris alone, primarily along the Champs-Élysées where large crowds gathered. Clashes erupted between fans and police, with fireworks, car horns, and chanting giving way to violence. Nationwide, 559 people were arrested, and 692 fires were reported, including 264 vehicles set ablaze. The unrest also resulted in 18 injured police officers in Paris, three more across other regions, 192 injured civilians, and seven fire personnel harmed during the response. Among the most serious incidents, a police officer in Normandy was placed in an induced coma. A criminal investigation has been launched into the incident for intentional violence against an officer. Championship Play-Off Final Highlights Premier League Promotion Challenges

Sunderland and Sheffield United face off in Saturday’s Championship play-off final, with Premier League riches awaiting the winner.  However, recent history shows the promotion dream can quickly sour, as all three sides promoted in the past two seasons have been relegated back immediately, a phenomenon previously only seen once in 1997/98. The widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship is clear. The bottom three Premier League teams over the last two seasons have amassed historically low points totals, with Luton, Burnley, and Sheffield United collecting just 66 points last year, and this season’s relegation trio, Leicester, Ipswich, and Southampton, on track to break that record with only 59 points combined. Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna commented on the challenge: “It’s clear that the gap is big… 17 teams have two full seasons of Premier League money and everything that comes with that. And it makes it harder for everyone to catch up.” Sheffield United earned £110 million from Premier League TV and commercial revenues last season despite finishing last, and when parachute payments over three years are included, a single Premier League season can exceed £200 million in revenue. The English Football League (EFL) is concerned about how these parachute payments distort the Championship’s competitive balance and sustainability. If Sheffield United join Leeds and Burnley in promotion this season, six of the last nine promoted clubs would have returned immediately after relegation. EFL chairman Rick Parry said, “The impact of these payments on the competitive balance of the Championship, and on the sustainability of all other clubs, is a major concern.”

Hull Sack Coach Ruben Selles Despite Securing Championship Survival

Hull City have dismissed head Coach Ruben Selles after less than six months in charge, despite successfully avoiding relegation from the Championship. The Tigers secured their place in English football’s second tier on the final day of the season, surviving on goal difference after being bottom of the table when Selles was appointed in December. At 41, the Spanish coach becomes the third manager to be sacked by Hull owner Acun Ilicali within the last year. The club is now searching for their fifth permanent manager since Ilicali took over in early 2022. In a club statement, Hull said: “Following a thorough review of football operations after a challenging campaign, the club feels a change in leadership is necessary to move the team forward in line with our ambitions. “ Hull entered the final day in the relegation zone but secured survival with a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth. Under Selles, the team won nine of his 27 league matches.

Dortmund Cruise Past Wolfsburg to Boost Champions League Push

Borussia Dortmund delivered a commanding performance on Sunday against VfL Wolfsburg. The victory extended BVB’s unbeaten league run to six matches and moved them into fourth place, the final Champions League qualification spot. Starting the day in sixth, Dortmund knew only a win would keep their UEFA Champions League hopes alive and they wasted no time setting the tone. Guirassy opened the scoring inside three minutes, calmly slotting past  Kamil Grabara after finding space in the box. Wolfsburg thought they had found a quick reply through Andreas Skov Olsen, but his back-post header wouldn’t have stood due to an offside in the buildup. That proved to be one of few threats posed by the visitors in a quiet first half. Although Dortmund held the lead at the break, they struggled to impose their dominance early on. That changed after the restart. Pascal Gross ignited the attack with a sublime Cruyff turn and found Guirassy, who fired in his second of the evening to double the lead just before the hour mark. With momentum fully on their side, the hosts added a third through substitute Karim Adeyemi. He wasn’t done yet, just minutes later, Adeyemi capped off his 100th appearance for the club with a second goal. Wolfsburg came close to a late consolation through Mohamed Amoura’s overhead kick. However, it wasn’t enough to spoil Dortmund’s clean sheet. The result sees Dortmund leapfrog SC Freiburg into fourth place, though they’ve played one game more. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, remain winless in eight league matches. They also sit 12th with little left to fight for in the closing weeks.

Lampard: Play-Off Spot ‘Only the Start’ for Ambitious Coventry

Frank Lampard says Coventry City’s dramatic rise into the Championship play-offs is just the beginning of their journey. He urged his team to stay grounded after an impressive turnaround. Since taking charge in November with Coventry languishing in 17th, Lampard has overseen a remarkable resurgence that has propelled the West Midlands club into fifth place. Their 2-0 victory over Middlesbrough on Saturday confirmed their play-off berth.. Speaking to talkSPORT after the match, Lampard praised the collective effort behind the club’s revival. “We came in on the 17th of November, so firstly I thank my staff. When you arrive mid-season, you want to make an immediate impact. They work tirelessly every day, supporting in areas where I’m not as strong,” he said. He also credited the existing squad and coaching staff for embracing the change and rising to the challenge. “To go from 17th to fifth and make the play-offs is a massive achievement, but it’s only the start. We’re not over-celebrating, this is a moment to thank the fans, who’ve stood by us all season. Everyone should enjoy tonight, but we know there’s more to do. ” Coventry will now turn their focus to the two-legged play-off against Sunderland, with a place in the Premier League just three games away.

Howe Hails Newcastle’s ‘Ruthless’ Isak After VAR Drama

Eddie Howe praised Alexander Isak “ruthless mentality” after the striker earned Newcastle United a dramatic 1-1 draw at Brighton on Sunday. It has kept their Champions League hopes alive amid a match dominated by VAR interventions. Isak netted from the spot in the 88th minute on the south coast. It registered his 23rd Premier League goal of the season and rescuing a crucial point for the visitors. The Magpies had trailed since the first half, when Yankuba Minteh fired Brighton ahead. Before Isak’s equaliser, Newcastle were twice awarded penalties, only for VAR to overturn both decisions. The first was rescinded when replays showed Anthony Gordon was fouled just outside the area by Tariq Lamptey. The second came after Joe Willock was judged to have dived. On both occasions, Isak had been ready to take the kick. “I’ve not been there myself, so I can’t put myself in his shoes,” said Howe.“But I can only imagine the process he is going through and then he has to stop, and that’s why he did very well because it would be very, very easy to miss that moment. But he didn’t.” The Swedish forward finally got his chance after Brighton substitute Yasin Ayari was penalised for a handball during Fabian Schär’s free-kick, leading to a third and final spot-kick. “He’s got that ruthless mentality to scoring goals. And that’s where you really lean on those type of players. To have the coolness of mind to just take a step back and go, ‘right, this is what I need to do’ and deliver it for the team. It was a brilliant penalty in a big moment because we needed something from the game. Losing the game would have dented us.” The result left Newcastle in fourth place, three points ahead of sixth-placed Nottingham Forest. But with three games remaining and the top five Premier League teams set to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, the race remains tight. Forest can draw level on points with both Newcastle and Chelsea if they win away at Crystal Palace on Monday.

Chargers Rookie Omarion Hampton Eyes ‘Dominant Duo’ with Najee Harris

The Los Angeles Chargers are ushering in a new era in their backfield, and rookie Omarion Hampton is embracing the vision. Selected No. 22 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, Hampton believes he and newly acquired veteran Najee Harris can form a “dominant duo” under head coach Jim Harbaugh. “We know they’re going to run the ball, so I’m loving it,” Hampton told The Jim Rome Show. “We got me and Najee, a dominant duo backfield. Omarion Hampton brings an elite college résumé, racking up over 2,000 scrimmage yards in his final season at North Carolina and ranking third nationally in total yards. With Harris, the Chargers add proven durability and experience to the equation. Harris has started 68 consecutive games and accumulated over 4,300 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns since 2021. Harbaugh’s ground-and-pound philosophy should suit both backs. Omarion Hampton added, “We know (Harbaugh)’s going to run the ball… he did it all his career, so I’m just excited to get started.” With a strong offensive line and Justin Herbert under center, L.A.’s backfield might be one of the league’s most intriguing storylines in 2025.
