Urías stays hot, homers to beat LA: ‘I feel amazing’

Ramón Urías was a bit discouraged on Sunday night. After he hit another home run in the Baltimore Orioles loss to the Houston Astros, the third baseman was asked the last time he felt good at the plate during his five-year career. “I can’t remember,” Urías said. “Honestly, this is probably the best that I’ve been feeling in the big leagues so far.” On Tuesday again, Urías delivered a big HR at Dodger Stadium. He hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Los Angeles starter Jack Flaherty in the fifth inning, leading the Orioles to a 3-2 win. By defeating the MLB-best Dodgers (78-54), Baltimore (77-56) were one game behind the Yankees (78-55) for the American League East lead. Urías, who is hitting .300 (15-for-50) since August 9th became the ninth Orioles player with 10-plus home runs this campaign. He has driven in five of Baltimore’s six runs over their past two matches.  “He’s been our offense the last couple weeks. Really good at-bats,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “We’re not swinging the bat great right now, and he’s carrying us a little bit offensively in some of these wins. And he’s playing with a lot of energy right now. He’s playing great.” Urías’ home signified the most important hit of the game. After Jackson Holliday hit a one-out single off Flaherty in the fifth, Urías followed suit with a 385-foot blast to left field. It was his 10th homer of the campaign, hitting five since August 10th.  Maybe Urías’ familiarity with Flaherty, who is a former teammate, helped him to come up with a good strategy. He waited to pounce on a 1-2 slider that caught too much of the bottom of the zone. “I was just trying to see the ball close to me,” Urías said. “I know that he likes to throw up and in, and his slider works when he’s down and away. Just trying to keep it close to me. Got a good pitch right there that didn’t break a lot and I could put a good swing on it.” Urías does not feel any pressure about stepping up for slumping teammates. He just wants to win. “I feel amazing. I feel good for helping the team,” Urías said. “I think we all go through ups and downs during the season, because it’s so long. Just happy to have the win tonight.”

Golden state warriors legend Alvin Attles dies at 87

Golden State Warriors legend Alvin Attles dies at 87

Al Attles, a Hall of Famer who coached the 1975 NBA champion Golden State Warriors dies at 87. Attes spent over six decades with the franchise as a player, general manager, and team ambassador.  The Warriors announced last Wednesday that Attles passed away in his East Bay home on Tuesday surrounded by family.  Nicknamed “The Destroyer’’for his style of play, he loved the Warriors and stayed only with the team after they selected him in the fifth round of the 1960 draft. Attles’ time at the team is the longest a player has spent in a single franchise in NBA history.  Attles, who was one of the first Black head coaches in the league, oversaw some of the greatest matches spanning different eras. He played in Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game for the Philadelphia Warriors in Hershey, Pennsylvania, on March 2, 1962. Attles also made all eight of his field-goal tries for 17 points.  He coached Hall of Famer Rick Barry the day Barry scored 64 against Portland on March 26. 1974. Attles watched Klay Thompson drop 60 points over three quarters in December 2016 too.  “My heart is heavy today with the loss of my mentor and friend. Al was my roommate during my rookie season in the league. He taught me valuable lessons on being a professional that couldn’t be learned on the court,” Barry said in a statement released by the Warriors. “Later, as our coach during the 1975 championship season, he exemplified leadership, togetherness and a keen strategic ability that enabled us to succeed at the highest level.” This is another devastating loss for the Bay Area sports community after Giants baseball Hall of Famers Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda recently died.  Attles coached Golden State to their first championship since moving West in 1975, then the Warriors won again 40 years later in 2015. His 557 coaching victories are most in franchise history.  He never compared all the great performances he cherished seeing up close. Different basketball times, different challenges. Attles said there were many special milestones to celebrate and appreciate. “I’ve seen a 100-point game,” Attles said from his seat during a late timeout on Thompson’s big night. “Rick was such a great player and he cared about winning. In order to score the number of points he scored you have to have help from your teammates. I try to look at them individually because once you start comparing, someone is always going to be No. 2. Let’s give him his credit.”

titans trade malik willis to packers for seventh round pick

Titans trade Malik Willis to Packers for seventh-round pick

Once seen as the ideal Tennessee Titans franchise quarterback, Malik Willis is now leaving Nashville. The Titans will trade Willis to the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2025 NFL Draft seventh-round pick. With Will Levis confirmed as the Titans starter and Mason Rudolph, a free-agent signee this offseason now cemented as the No.2 in Tennessee, Willis will move on.  Currently, The Green Bay Packers’ Jordan Love is backed up by 2023 fifth-rounder Sean Clifford and 2024 seventh-rounder Michael Pratt. Neither of them shined in preseason and Willis will be a more experienced option.  Some people saw him as a potential first-rounder in a 2022 draft class that had no QB talent. He eventually fell to the third, where he was the third QB chosen overall. Willis, Kenny Pickett (first round, No. 20 overall), Desmond Ridder (No. 74) are on different teams now. Matt Corral and Sam Howell have moved on too. Brock Purdy, the last pick of that draft is now with the San Francisco 49ers.  Willis has played in 11 matches with three starts in two campaigns. All those starts were as a rookie when he went 1-2. He completed 53% of his 66 passes for 350 yards and has yet to throw an NFL touchdown pass. Willis has some fire in his legs, rushing for 144 yards (4.5 yards average) and a TD. Still young, Malik moving to Green Bay will give him the chance to improve his game under Matt LaFleur. But for now, he should improve the Packers’ QB unit behind Love.

aaron judge stuns temmates with big hr robbery

Aaron Judge stuns teammates with big HR robbery

Aaron Judge already made his mark as the player with more homers than anyone else in the baseball. But him robbing home runs is certainly taking things to the next level. Judge stayed at 51 homers throughout Monday’s series opener at Washington, but that did not stop him from making a huge impact at the center-field wall. This one followed his glove, as Judge lurched to steal what would have been a game-tying home run by Andrés Chaparro in the fourth inning of New York’s 5-2 victory over the Nationals. “I was pretty pumped up about that one,” Judge said. Aaron Judge also secured career No.1,000, Gleyber Torres, Austin Wells and Jazz Chisholm Jr. all scored home runs. Nestor Cortes delivered 6 ⅔ innings of one-run ball as the Yankees maintained the AL’s top record by delivering another win in Juan Soto’s former ballpark. That victory extended New York’s lead at the American League East, two matches ahead of the Baltimore Orioles, their biggest since June 26.  Judge drew a walk too before connecting for his 1,000th career hit, a single to the opposite field in the ninth. Aaron is the 42nd player in Yankees history to achieve this milestone, and the first since Brett Gardner did it in 2017.

Goran Dragic retires from basketball in charity match with teammates, legends

Goran Dragic, one of international basketball history’s underrated successes, retired from the sport with a charity match that featured legends and teammates who were close to him. The “Night of the Dragon,’’ which was held on Saturday in his home country Slovenia, was headlined by a match placing Dragic and few teammates against Slovenian star Luka Donic. Other players present were Steve Nash, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, and Nikola Jokic. They honored Dragic’s last high-profile appearance on the basketball court.  Proceeds from the charity game and adjacent contests were donated to the Botrstvo v sportu program of the Friends of Youth Foundation Ljubljana Moste-Polje and the Goran Dragic Foundation.  Dragic also played against his brother, Zoran, whom he was briefly teammates with on the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat in 2014-15. The evening closed with a mini-soccer match and on-court moments with family, including his son, father, and nephew.  The Suns traded for Dragic’s rights after he was chosen 45th overall in the 2008 Draft. He shone as a substitute point guard behind Nash, before he was traded to Houston. His time at Houston was marked by a 23-point fourth quarter in Game 3 of the 2010 Western Conference semifinals against the San Antonio Spurs.  He returned to Phoenix in 2012 through free agency, where he became the lead guard and won the award for 2013-14 Most Improved Player and All-NBA Third Team honors.  Dragic took another step forward in his career when he joined the Miami Heat in 2015. The 6-foot-3 lefty led Slovenia to an unexpected and unprecedented championship at EuroBasket 2017. He was named an Eastern Conference All-Star the following season. Dragic also played a significant role in the Heat reaching the 2020 NBA Finals. He averaged between 16 and 21 points per match in five different seasons while playing 946 games. His 4,405 career assists place 97th all-time. The Slovenian basketball team retired Dragic’s No.3.

juju smith-schuster back to chiefs after release from patriots

JuJu Smith-Schuster back to Chiefs after release from Patriots

JuJu Smith-Schuster has returned to Kansas City. The former Super-Bowl- winning receiver signed with the Chiefs.  Smith-Schuster led Kansas City wide receivers in 2022, scoring 933 yards on 78 catches with three touchdowns. He trails only Travis Kelce in yards and catches.  JuJu signed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots last season but struggled with injuries and was inconsistent. He caught only 29 passes for 260 yards in 11 matches. New England released him earlier this month.  With the dead money present in his release from the Patriots, Schuster’s deal with Kansas City is likely a minimum level one.  The Chiefs have been battling Hollywood Brown’s shoulder injury, which could be why the added Smith-Schuster this late in the game. With Brown absent, the Chiefs have been working with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Justin Watson atop the depth chart. They may just want another veteran to the squad. This could also be because of Rice’s legal situation.  Andy Reid’s team has conducted a battle for the last WR spots during training camp. Adding Smith-Schuster could determine if Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney or Justyn Ross make the squad.

predators trade askarov to the sharks

Predators trade Askarov to the Sharks

The San Jose Sharks traded Yaroslav Askarov to the Nashville Predators on Friday and signed a two-year, $4 million contract ($2 million average annual value). The contract starts with the 2025-26 season.  “It’s a really big day for our franchise, I believe,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said of acquiring the goalie. “… To have an opportunity to add him to our group is really exciting, and I think it kind of breathes some more positive energy into the group.” Nashville bought prospect David Edstrom, goalie prospect Magnus Chrona and a conditional first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft (formerly acquired by San Jose from the Vegas Golden Knights). If that pick is in the top 10, San Jose will have to either transfer their first-round pick in the 2025 draft or the Golden Knights selection.  San Jose also bought minor-league forward Nolan Burke and a third-round pick in the 2025 draft.  Askarov could have been a restricted free agent after this season.  “He’s in the fold, he’s all in, he’s excited to be here,” Grier said. Nashville chose Askarov with the No. 11 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. He is 1-1-0 with a 2.58 goals against average and .914 save percentage in three matches over two seasons with the Predators.  He was the top-rated European goalie in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2020 draft and became the third Russia-born goalie in NHL history to be selected first at the position. He joins Ilya Samsonov (Washington Capitals, No. 22, 2015 NHL Draft) and Andrei Vasilevskiy (Tampa Bay Lightning, No. 19, 2012 NHL Draft). “We’ve talked about him kind of off and on over the whole year, probably,” Grier said. “… He’s obviously a super-talented goalie, and there’s not too many opportunities where you have the chance to go after a young goalie like this and add him to your group.” Grier said San Jose are confident Askarov can become a No. 1 goalie in the NHL because of his size (6-foot-3, 178 pounds) and athleticism, plus the way he handles the puck and read the game. “When you’re that size and you have the ability to anticipate and read plays and the athletic ability he has, I think it’s all about him just putting it all together,” Grier said. NHL Network’s Kevin Weekes reported that Askarov requested a trade. Nashville then released a statement on Monday from Barry Trotz saying the expectation was for him to report to training camp in September and compete for the position.  Trotz while speaking to The Tennessean on Friday said that the Predators discussed privately with Askarov in recent weeks about trading him. Once that trade request became public it hastened the team’s timeline for doing that.  “We talked about exploring some things, working together to see where this process would go through training camp,” Trotz told the newspaper. “But once it became public, it pushed to a different place in terms of the decision time.” The Predators have three other goaltenders on their roster: No. 1 goalie Juuse Saros, Matt Murray and Scott Wedgewood.
