Tottenham has announced a new ‘legacy initiative’ involving registering all the players who played for the club. Every Spurs player who has made a competitive appearance for the club since its first match in 1894 has been assigned a unique number.
The number will be written on the back of match shirts beneath the collar, starting with Tottenham’s next Premier League game against Crystal Palace on Friday night.
Tottenham Spurs’ starting XI in their FA Cup tie against West Herts on 13 October 1894 have been assigned numbers one to 11, with a total of 879 players given a number in chronological order of their appearance for the team.
These include Bill Nicholson (#354), Danny Blanchflower (#420), Jimmy Greaves (#4480, Pat Jennings (#455), Steve Perryman (#477), Glenn Hoddle (#498), Ossie Ardiles (#511), Gary Mabbutt (#538), Ledley King (#649), Gareth Bale (#726), Harry Kane (#767) and Heung-Min Son (#805).
Alejo Veliz, who recently made his competitive debut against Liverpool on 30th September, is #879 – currently the last number on the evolving list, which was compiled using “extensive research from club historians’’.
