These two teams clash after a World Cup campaign that has ushered in a new era for both of them. Portugal were eliminated by Uruguay at the round of 16 as they failed to build on their Euro 2016 success in France.
They have witnessed some of their trusted names retire from International football, and Cristiano Ronaldo has asked not to be called for now as he considers international retirement, so Fernando Santos would be having a largely inexperienced group for this game.
The Portuguese had a poor defence at the World Cup, but Pepe has stayed on the international scene and would be looking to usher in the new generation of international defenders, but this game would be a testing one for an untested defence.
Croatian football is on the rise, and after they reached the final of the World Cup, the Blazers would be targetting winning Euro 2020, but the work starts now. Although some of their players have left the international scene, they have managed to hold on to the likes of Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic, and Ivan Perisic, so we expect a solid team for this game.
Croatia dominated the match the last time these two teams met at Euro 2016, but Portugal still dumped them out on their way to winning the competition, the Croatians would consider this payback time.
The UEFA Nations League’s inaugural season sees these two heavyweights clash after varying degrees of success at the last World Cup.
Germany became the latest victims of ‘defending champions curse’ as they crash out in the group stages in Russia despite being in a group that we all expected them to thrive in.
Joachim Low is now looking to get his players back among the winners with a successful campaign this time around. He has named almost the same team from the World with Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira the major absentees, and Leroy Sane securing a return.
France went all the way to win the World Cup in Russia, and the French team seems to still be in celebratory mood ahead of this clash. However, Didier Deschamp would still have the pleasure of picking a team of players who have returned to form for their clubs, and they should compound Germany’s misery here.
These teams have met six times in the last six years, France have won three times, including the semifinal defeat of Germany at Euro 2016, while Germany have won 2 times including eliminating France at the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

Barcelona have not given up hopes of signing Paul Pogba and the Catalan’s have gotten the support of some of the star players ahead of the next transfer window.
Pogba told Manchester United that he wanted to move to Barcelona this summer after his relationship with Jose Mourinho hit an all-time low, but the Red Devils refused to entertain offers for him.
His relationship with the Special One has still not improved greatly and a January move is reportedly still on the cards. Gerard Pique was the first Barcelona player to welcome the idea of playing alongside the World Cup winner, and Luis Suarez has added his voice.
Asked about Pogba’s move to the Camp Nou, Luis Suarez said: “Pogba’s an elite player who’s won everything.
“He has a lot of quality. I think he would like to be competing for more than he is at the moment.
“He’s not a player that belongs to Barca, but he would always be welcome.”
The Premier League season has reached the 4th week, and there have been ups and downs for almost all the teams. Liverpool, Chelsea, and Watford are all on maximum points, and they wouldn’t have achieved that without the contributions of some key members of their squad, here are our best players for week 4.
Alex Mc-Carthy – Goalkeeper, Southampton
Alex McCarthy has moved above Fraser Forster as Southampton’s first choice. At first, I was taken aback by the decision to make McCarthy first choice over Forster, but the 28 years old has proved to be a hit since he was named first-choice goalkeeper and last week, he helped the Saints to their first win of the season.
Marcos Alonso – Left back, Chelsea
Chelsea have started the campaign under a new manager, and Marcos Alonso is still as impressive as ever. He has been one of the best attacking left backs in the league since he joined in 2016, but the season he has added goals and even more assists to his game. He takes our left back spot ahead of Andrew Robertson.
Craig Cathcart – centre-back, Watford
Watford have made a solid start to the new league season, and much of that success can be attributed to their defence. One of their most important defenders is Craig Cathcart, and he showed yet again last weekend why he is so highly rated.
After falling behind to an own goal against Tottenham, he helped the Hornets keep things tight at the back as they came back to beat the Lilywhites 2-1 and maintain their 100 percent record, including scoring the winner.
Virgil van Dijk – centre-back, Liverpool
Van Dijk has been so good since he joined Liverpool in January that nobody talks about the £75 million fees it took to sign him from Southampton. He showed his class against Leicester City again at the weekend and was it not for a howler from Alisson, Liverpool would still have not conceded a goal this season.
Kyle Walker – Right Back, Manchester City
Kyle Walker is another player who made a big-money move last summer and he helped Pep Guardiola win his first Premier League crown. He remains one of the best right backs in the country, and his goal last weekend proved to be the difference between 3 points and one point for Manchester City.
Fellaini – Center Midfield, Manchester United
Manchester United fans were disappointed that Fellaini was offered a new deal this summer, but Jose Mourinho knows just why the Belgian should be kept at Old Trafford. Following back to back losses, Mourinho played Fellaini against Burnley and he helped the Red Devils to a first win in three attempts.
Jean Seri – Center Midfield, Fulham
Seri rejected Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal to sign for Fulham this summer, and it has taken him time to adjust to the Premier League, but the Ivorian has been impressive this past two weeks. He scored his first goal against Burnley and helped the Cottagers to a draw last weekend with impressive displays from midfield.
Sadio Mane – Left midfield, Liverpool
This season seems to be Sadio Mane’s at Liverpool as it is hard to stop the Senegalese from scoring at the moment. He scored his fourth goal of the season against Leicester City, and although Liverpool were outplayed for much of the match, the goal still proved important as they earned a 2-1 win.
Rachid Ghezzal – right midfield, Leicester City
Leicester City signed Ghezzal to replace Riyad Mahrez this summer, and the former Monaco man has a huge boot to fill. However, he has not started badly. He impressed against Liverpool as he constantly looked like the player who is likely to make things happen for the Foxes and he got the goal that his performance deserved.
Romelu Lukaku – Striker, Manchester United
Manchester United did not start the season well, but it appears that Romelu Lukaku has taken responsibility and his double against Burnley has definitely helped to lift moods around Old Trafford. That is his 3rd league goal this season, and he could be in the race for the Golden boot again.
Aleksandar Mitrovic – striker, Fulham
Newcastle fans would be looking over at Fulham and wonder why Rafa Benitez sold Aleksandar Mitrovic. While the Magpies have scored just 3 goals this season, the Serbian has netted four times in as many Premier League games, if he continues this way, he can score up to 20 goals by the end of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo left Real Madrid this summer to make a stunning £88 million move to Juventus. Having failed to get his desired wage at Real Madrid, the Portugal captain decided to move to Juventus who had agreed to pay him as much as Lionel Messi earns at Barcelona.
However, before completing the move, the former Manchester United star was reportedly keen to return to Old Trafford this summer.
Reports claim that the Red Devils were offered the chance to sign him, but Jose Mourinho vetoed the move in fear that he would be left short of funds to strengthen other parts of his team.
Ronaldo is a fan favourite at Old Trafford and his return would have boosted the mood around the club as well as improve their commercial value.
Ronaldo would nevertheless return to Old Trafford at some point this season as Juventus have been drawn with Manchester United in the same Champions League group.
