bonderman dies at 82

David Bonderman, who headed the group that introduced NHL to Seattle, died on Wednesday. He was 82.

On December 4th, 2018, the NHL awarded the expansion franchise to the group led by Bonderman. While he was the majority owner, the other members included major players in the business and sports industry. Bonderman’s longtime business associate, Hollywood producer and director Jerry Bruckheimer, Space Needle steward David Wright, and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy are also part of the group.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Bonderman, the co-founder of global alternative asset management firm, TPG, and owner of the NHL’s 32nd franchise, the Seattle Kraken,” the Kraken said in a statement.

“David died Wednesday at the age of 82, surrounded by his family.

“‘Bondo,'” as he was known to friends and colleagues, leaves behind a legacy marked by brilliance at every stage of his illustrious career combined with a relentless quest for knowledge and a passion for music, sports, adventure, and conservation. David was a true friend to many and, above all else, a devoted father of five and grandfather of three.”

The Seattle Kraken made their NHL debut on October 12 2021, and competed in their first regular-season match in Seattle on October 23 that same year.
