{"id":16902,"date":"2023-10-04T15:15:41","date_gmt":"2023-10-04T14:15:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/matchplug.com\/blog\/?p=16902"},"modified":"2023-10-04T15:15:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-04T14:15:50","slug":"nba-players-discuss-the-new-participation-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/matchplug.com\/blog\/nba-players-discuss-the-new-participation-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"NBA Players discuss the new participation policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The NBA Board of Governors approved a new participation policy mainly geared toward star players, in September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With new policies and penalties abound, the NBA has made it a rule that all healthy players should be on the court.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is no argument from the players, who said they are not interested in sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some players do not agree with load management any more than the fans who cannot understand why some of the world\u2019s best athletes often need a night off. However, they need the NBA to understand that there are situations like Kawhi Leonard\u2019s lone season in Toronto when they must listen to their bodies or their doctors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was coming from an injury and you have to know the details of the doctor,\u201d Leonard, now with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/clippers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Los Angeles Clippers<\/a>, said Monday. \u201cBut if the league is seeing or trying to mock what I did with the Raptors, they should stop because I was injured the whole year. But other than that, if I\u2019m able to play, I\u2019ll play basketball. I\u2019ll work out every day in the summertime to play the game, not to sit and watch people play. No league policy is helping me to play more games.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few of Leonard\u2019s absences in recent years are the type the league wants to eliminate with its Player Participation Policy that will take effect this season. Leonard missed 22 games in 2018-19, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/raptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Toronto Raptors <\/a>were careful to avoid overuse after he came back from a thigh injury that limited him to nine games the previous season. The NBA believes that those scheduled nights, called load management have become too rampant and can be potentially bad for business if they drive away viewers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the league is trying to figure out ways to make our game better, to help grow the game, understanding that fan engagement is important for all of us,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/pelicans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Orleans <\/a>guard CJ McCollum, the president of the players\u2019 association. \u201cAs a fan of sports, when you go to a game, you want the stars to play. You\u2019re paying a premium on the ticket \u2026 or maybe it\u2019s the cable package or whatever you have, you want to see the best players play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The participation policy will prevent teams, without approval, from resting multiple key players&nbsp; (read as anyone who was an All-NBA or All-Star selection in the prior three seasons) in the same match, or sitting healthy ones in national TV or in-season tournament games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The league vowed to investigate certain absences, with penalties that would surpass $1 million if a team has three violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cObviously the NBA is always trying to find a way to get the best players playing. And why? Well, because we want people to tune into their TVs and watch,\u201d said Michael Malone, coach of the NBA champion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/nuggets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Denver Nuggets<\/a>. \u201cAnd they\u2019re going to watch when the best players show up every night and play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That has happened far too infrequently in recent years. Even as the league has reduced back-to-back games from teams\u2019 schedules and reduced and improved their travel, some top players rarely come close to 82 games. Players bear the brunt of the criticism from fans, even though Commissioner Adam Silver, well before the new policy was introduced in September, has said it\u2019s often the teams deciding when they will be rested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the league\u2019s approach in trying to get players to player more, I think that\u2019s great. I\u2019m trying to play as many games as I possibly can,\u201d Boston\u2019s Jaylen Brown said. \u201cIt don\u2019t always be the players. I know that\u2019s the narrative, that it\u2019s the players that decide not to play. I won\u2019t go into detail, but that\u2019s not always the case.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another new policy which addresses them more directly. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement requires players, in most cases, to play in 65 regular-season matches to qualify for awards like MVP or the All-NBA teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there are guys across the league that may sit out because they don\u2019t want to play or they want to rest or whatever it may be. But I think playing a minimum of 65 games, I think that\u2019s smart for the league, for the fans, for everybody,\u201d Miami\u2019s Tyler Herro said. \u201cThis is a business at the end of the day. A lot of people come to watch us play. I wouldn\u2019t want to be a fan that came to see me play and I\u2019m not playing because I don\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marcus Smart won the Defensive Player of the Year award last season in Boston and certainly would want to disqualify himself this season by missing too many matches. But he understands that he will need to miss some, and like Leonard, will not be compelled by the NBA\u2019s new participation policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can care less what anybody says about that, because they\u2019re not out there throwing their body around like I am,\u201d said Smart, now in Memphis. \u201cSo I don\u2019t see how you can tell me when I should and shouldn\u2019t play. If I don\u2019t feel like I can play, then I\u2019m not playing.
