Arsenal unsurprisingly open new contract talks with Saliba

William Saliba has been a star in the current Arsenal team and it is not a surprise that the club plans to offer him a new contract. The defender joined them in 2019, but he didn’t break into their first team until now and he spent the last few seasons on loan. In the last campaign, he emerged as the best young player in France after a season at Olympique Marseille on loan. That convinced Mikel Arteta that the defender could deliver for his team and he hasn’t slowed down since then. He is arguably the best defender in England now and clubs around the world will jump at the chance to sign him. Arsenal knows this and the Matchplug understands they have plans to offer him a new contract sooner than later. They are confident he would extend his deal because he is enjoying his time at the Emirates.

Chelsea is leading the race to sign AC Milan striker  Rafael Leao, Matchplug understands. The Blues wanted to sign the Portuguese attacker in the last transfer window, but they couldn’t secure an agreement with the Italian club. Milan held on to him because he is a key player for them and one of the reasons they won the Serie A title last season. He continues to show brilliant form for them and Chelsea has continued to circle, an act that might eventually benefit them. The Blues have been signing some of the best young players around to their squad and Leao is one man they believe should be on their team. The report claims they might have to pay as much as £87m for his signature if they are serious about adding him to their squad. He has a long contract at Milan and they only sell him for a high fee, which they hope will eventually discourage Chelsea.

Neville says Foden must start at the World Cup

Gary Neville beleives Phil Foden must start for England at the World Cup in Qatar even though he struggles in the national team. The Manchester City man has started this season very well after stunning in some matches including a derby day hat-trick against Manchester United at the weekend. He does well in the sky blue shirt of City, but he is yet to take that form to the international stage for England and that has baffled many fans. Foden is one of the finest talents in the world, yet the England national team managers cannot find a place for him on their team, like Trent Alexander-Arnold. Neville insists Foden is a generational talent and there is a problem if there is no space for him on the national team. He said via Matchplug: ‘I feel really strongly on the forward options. ‘I love a lot of those players but if we can’t find a starting position for Phil Foden in our national team I think that’s a real problem.  ‘He is a generational talent. He is a different level in that sense. That feels more wrong to me than Trent Alexander-Arnold.’

Carragher names players that have helped Arsenal

Former Liverpool man, Jamie Carragher has heaped praises on William Saliba and Gabriel Jesus and he believes they are the players who have helped Arsenal become a stronger team. The Gunners are at the top of the Premier League table and they confirmed they were serious title challengers with a 3-1 win against Tottenham at the weekend. This Arsenal team is much stronger than the one we have seen in recent times and they are now genuine title challengers. It is hard to find a weakness in them, but just a season ago, they were not this strong and Spurs beat them to the top four spot. However, they bolstered their squad in the last transfer window and two players have stood out since this campaign, according to Carragher. He said, as quoted by Matchplug: A lot of people thought that this season, maybe Spurs would be in the position that Arsenal is in now. ‘I’ve seen Spurs got a bit of criticism, but in terms of how Conte plays – they played like a Conte team. If they’d have got the final pass right on three or four occasions, they should have gone in at half-time in front. ‘But I take nothing away from Arsenal, I’ve been so impressed with them at the start of the season – the pace they play at, the football they play. ‘And the two signings…well not signings but Saliba and Jesus have come in and completely taken this team to another level.’

Arteta says Arsenal will not repeat last season’s performance against Tottenham

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, insists his team has learnt from their poor performance against Tottenham at the backend of last season and they will do better in this game. The Gunners host Spurs is one of the top matches of the weekend across Europe and it promises to be an interesting game. The Lilywhites are only one point behind Arteta’s men which makes this one of the most important North London derbies in decades. If Arsenal wins, they will open up a four-point gap on Spurs at the top of the league table, but if they lose, Spurs will topple them and temporarily top the league table. Antonio Conte’s men’s 3-0 win in this game last season spoilt Arsenal’s chance of making the top four, but Arteta expects vengeance today. The Spaniard said via Matchplug: ‘It’s a different context. ‘We went into that game with many different circumstances, in terms of players we had available, not available, what happened during the game. ‘You take the lessons, you learn from it and you move on, that’s it.’

The Dutchman had a lot of success at Ajax after a spell under Guardiola at Bayern Munich. Several clubs had their eyes on him, but he chose United.
